Reflecting on 65 years of Imamat - Part seven: 2017-2022

Post by kmaherali »

On 11 July 2022, the global Jamat will commemorate a rare milestone – Mawlana Hazar Imam’s 65th Imamat Day. In the seventh and concluding part of this series, we look back at his past five years as Imam.

During the last five years, from 2017 to 2022, Mawlana Hazar Imam’s Imamat has been shaped by his Diamond Jubilee celebrations, the Covid-19 pandemic, and a commitment to helping vulnerable communities live better lives despite the global threat of climate change.

The Diamond Jubilee began on 11 July 2017, when Jamati leaders from around the world paid homage to Mawlana Hazar Imam at his residence in Aiglemont, marking the 60th year of his Imamat. Across the globe, members of the Jamat gathered to watch the ceremony and to celebrate this historic event.

Over the next 12 months, Mawlana Hazar Imam visited the Jamats in Uganda, Tanzania, Pakistan, the UAE, India, USA, Kenya, Canada, France, the UK, and Portugal. During each visit, the Imam was honoured by members of government and civil society. This included receiving Uganda’s highest honour, the Most Excellent Order of the Pearl of Africa, the UN Foundation’s Champion of Change Award, and the Asia Society’s Game Changer Lifetime Achievement Award.

As with previous Jubilees, Mawlana Hazar Imam continued to establish new institutions throughout the Diamond Jubilee year. These included attending the first Global Pluralism Award ceremony in Ottawa and inaugurating the AKU Centre for Innovation in Medical Education in Karachi, the Sunder Nursery in Delhi, and the Aga Khan Centre in London.

In addition, commencing global leadership for the newly formed Aga Khan Agency for Habitat (AKAH) meant redoubling efforts to enable communities living in dangerous places – notably in the high disaster-prone mountains of Central Asia – to respond effectively to the daunting effects of climate change.

“His Highness observed, earlier than most of us, that the risks were getting worse,” said Onno Ruhl, General Manager of AKAH, about communities living in the so-called roof of the world. “He realised that in order to improve the quality of life in rural and mountainous communities, you need to be more ambitious in what you pursue in terms of risk management, in terms of preparedness, so that people survive and thrive, despite the risks.”

Today, AKAH is helping communities in both dense urban centres and remote mountain villages to combat climate change by rethinking the ways buildings are designed, constructed and operated – putting green building principles at the heart of development. More broadly, these principles are leading AKDN’s efforts to green the built environment across all its institutions and programmes and reach net zero carbon by 2030.

The Jubilee year culminated with the Diamond Jubilee Celebration in Lisbon, in which some 40,000 Ismailis from over 45 countries came together for a joyous weeklong celebration. During this visit, Mawlana Hazar Imam was given State honours during a visit to the Presidential Palace and delivered an address to the Portuguese Parliament. At a concluding ceremony held on 11 July 2018, Mawlana Hazar Imam officially designated the Seat of the Ismaili Imamat, followed by a Darbar with members of the global Jamat.

At the designation ceremony, Mawlana Hazar Imam explained the reasons for establishing the Seat in Portugal:

“Over the years, the Portuguese have shown friendship, understanding, and a warm welcome to the Jamat as well as to the Imamat. Ours is a relationship grounded in the shared values of religious freedom, tolerance, and pluralism. I believe, alongside strengthening the Imamat’s capacities, this will also enable our institutions to make a constructive and beneficial contribution to areas of mutual interest.”

Following the Diamond Jubilee year, Mawlana Hazar Imam’s institutional activities continued. AKDN’s cultural activities were further strengthened with the Imam attending the inauguration of the Aga Khan Garden in Edmonton and the first prize-giving ceremony of the Aga Khan Music Awards in Lisbon.

Over the course of the last 65 years, Mawlana Hazar Imam has received more than 70 international honours, awards, and honorary degrees from various governments, universities, and civil society organisations.

These include honorary degrees from the University of Calgary, the University of British Columbia and Simon Fraser University received in 2018, and the keys to the city of Porto in Portugal in 2019.

Starting in March 2020, in the face of Covid-19 lockdowns and the closure of Jamatkhanas around the world, Mawlana Hazar Imam led the Jamati and AKDN institutions in their pandemic response. He also gave guidance to the Jamat by sending numerous messages and Talikas that were distributed online. The Imam emphasised the importance of following public health measures to keep individuals, families, and communities safe. He also emphasised the importance of abiding by the historic values of our Jamat, such as voluntary service, caring for others – particularly those in greatest need – and the importance of private, personal prayer.

In 2021, Mawlana Hazar Imam spoke virtually at AKU’s Global Virtual Convocation, AKU’s Kenya Charter Granting Ceremony, and the first Convocation of the University of Central Asia.

On 13 December 2021, Mawlana Hazar Imam celebrated his 85th birthday with members of his family. In a Talika Mubarak sent on that occasion, our beloved Imam said:

“It is my conviction that the traditional values of our Tariqah – of commitment to the faith, unity, self-reliance, care and generosity for others – will serve the Jamat well as we plan for the future… I send my most affectionate loving blessings for your good health and happiness, spiritual progress, worldly success, strength of faith, and unity, with best loving blessings for mushkil-asan. You are all most particularly in my heart, in my thoughts, and in my prayers.”

In this series, we have reflected on the immense scope and impact of the work of the Imamat since 1957. This work has demonstrated Mawlana Hazar Imam’s tireless efforts, not only for the benefit of the Jamat, but for humanity at large. He has guided the Jamat through periods of struggle and turmoil, and has prepared us to look to the future with a sense of confidence, fortitude, and hope.

65 Years of Principles In Action

Post by kmaherali »

JollyGul first published this editorial 2 years ago for Imamat Day 2020. We are re-publishing this with some minor date updates.

65 Years of Principles In Action
Something happened on July 11, 1957 that changed the life of a 20 year-old student at Harvard University.

Our 48th Imam Sir Sultan Muhammad Shah Aga Khan III passed the responsibilities of the Ismaili Imamat to Prince Karim our present Imam who was still a student at Harvard University.

That day, everything changed for our Imam-e-Zaman. Personal ambition and interests got replaced in an instant with a life of service - the Jamat would take center place in his life henceforth.

Over the next decades, millions of lives would be touched by the work of Mawlana Hazar Imam. People would pass through our schools, universities and hospitals, many would get touched by the rural support programs, primary health care outreach, emergency relief efforts, scholarships, museum and historical sites, architecture and garden projects, economic initiatives in areas where the private sector would dare not venture - but the Imamat would, to pave the path for others.

One life touched at a time, millions of beneficiaries over the decades. Life paths changed for the better.

So what are we celebrating on July 11th 2022? As Ismailis, of course, we are expressing our deep gratitude and appreciation for 65 years of guidance, love, leadership and service by our beloved Hazar Imam. And we are re-affirming our absolute and complete spiritual allegiance to our Imam-e-Zaman in accordance with our faith.

But we are not stopping there. We are also celebrating the millions of lives that have been touched and made better over the decades by the vastly expanded scope of activities by our "ambitious 49th Imam".

In the picture taken at Harvard in 1958, Hazar Imam is reading a letter and looks happy. You can also detect a smile. But close your eyes for a minute, and just imagine the weight of responsibilities on our Imam at that time.

Now fast forward to 2022 and look at our community today. Geographically dispersed but united, aware of its history of 1,400 years but always forward looking. Tolerant and embracing diversity but always taking a firm stand on right versus wrong. Balancing worldly pursuits with spiritual awareness and social conscience. Economically successful but believing that wealth creation only makes sense if it improves the lives of all.

All this flows from the ethics of our faith. But there are two things that Mawlana Hazar Imam has always done. First, he has constantly reminded us of these principles. And secondly, he has led us by example and demonstrated to us in so many different ways on how to make these principles actionable in our daily lives.

Leadership matters. We have seen countries around the world, rich and poor, with beautifully written constitutions and founding documents get into a state of total dysfunction not because they do not have these principles written somewhere, but because people have conveniently forgotten about them and leaders are looking for short-term gains and being opportunistic.

Looking back the last 65 years, we see in Mawlana Hazar Imam a steadfast vision, a deep concern always for the Jamat and societies in which they live, a rigorous work ethic and a unique ability to translate these principles into real life vibrant institutions, projects and programs for the benefit of millions of people.

We feel truly blessed on this 65th Imamat Day.

Imamat Day Mubarak From The JollyGul Team!

Imamat Day

Post by mahebubchatur »

Foremost among the principles of the Shia Ismaili Tariqah of Islam is the recognition of the Imam of the Time. Imamat Day is an occasion to reaffirm this principle, express gratitude to Mawlana Hazar Imam, and to reaffirm our spiritual allegiance to the Imam and our commitment to the ethics of the faith.

Sixty-five years ago, on 11 July 1957, Mawlana Hazar Imam succeeded his grandfather, Mawlana Sultan Mahomed Shah, as the 49th hereditary Imam of the Shia Ismaili Muslims.

In keeping with the 1,400-year old tradition of Muslim leadership, covering all interpretations of Islam, Mawlana Hazar Imam has guided his murids in matters of faith and worked tirelessly to improve the quality and security of their lives. This latter concern extends not only to the Ismailis but all those who share their lives – locally, nationally and internationally.

Mawlana Hazar Imam's vision, as well as the Imamat's institutional capacity to catalyse human development, have been widely recognised by governments, international organisations and civil society institutions. Today, the Ismaili Imamat's privileged relationships with many of these, enhance its capacity to contribute to human development on a global scale.

It is through the leadership and guidance of the Imam-of-the-Time that the Jamat has been able to respond effectively to various challenges, and emerge as a resilient community. Today, our Jamat and its institutions, under Mawlana Hazar Imam’s visionary leadership, are making significant contributions to the societies where we live.

Imamat Day is an occasion to reaffirm our allegiance and gratitude to Mawlana Hazar Imam for his benevolence and guidance, and to renew our commitment to the ethics of the faith. On the occasion of the 65th anniversary of Mawlana Hazar Imam's accession to the Ismaili Imamat, The Ismaili extends warmest Imamat Day wishes to all Ismaili Muslims around the world.(TheIsmaili)

Immamat Days are celebrations recognizing the importance of the institution of Imamat in the lives of the Jamat and the murids. It has nothing to do with the birth of the noor which is timeless.

Ya Ali Khub Mijalas" is a munajat that describes the enthronement of the Imam and is traditionally recited on Imamat Day by the South Asian Jamats. It was composed for the installation of Mawlana Sultan Mahomed Shah in 1885 and was updated when Hazar Imam acceded to the Imamat.

This video, with a recitation by Alnoor Saleh, shows footage from Hazar Imam’s installation and Takht-i Nashini ceremonies. Watch the full film entitled "A Guiding Light, The Imam of the Shia Muslims," (TheIsmaili)

“ A Munajat & Ginans are Imams guidance ( Farman) in the form of poetry recited during & as a part of the #Ismaili religious & congregational prayers “

“always keep My Farmans in your hearts. Do not forget them. It must not happen that so long as I am physically present here, you read My Farmans and that later on, you no longer read them; this must not occur. Just like you read Ginans, read My Farmans. The way you seek out the meaning of Ginans, the same way, seek out the meaning of My Farmans.

My Farmans themselves are the Ginans.
After I leave, do not think that Sahib has left. Just as you consider the Imam as ever present, in the same manner, consider Him as present. Hazar Imam does not always remain physically present but you must consider Him as present. For, I am always with you”                                    Dar-es-Salam, 29-09-1899

2023, July 11: At Diwan of the Ismaili Imamat

Members of Mawlana Hazar Imam’s family welcomed President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa and other senior leaders to commemorate Imamat Day at the Diwan of the Ismaili Imamat in Lisbon.

The Diwan of the Ismaili Imamat today hosted an Imamat Day reception attended by Prince Amyn, Prince Rahim, and Prince Aly Muhammad, along with senior leaders of government, civil society, and the Aga Khan Development Network.

Distinguished guests were offered a first look at the restored site of the Palacete Mendonça in Portugal’s capital. The meticulous and multi-year refurbishment has stayed true to the building’s original design from 1902 by the architect Ventura Terra.

On behalf of Mawlana Hazar Imam, Prince Amyn extended a warm welcome to guests on this special occasion, the 66th anniversary of Hazar Imam’s ascension to the Ismaili Imamat.

“While this is not an opening of the Diwan,” he said, “it is very special for us at last to be able to host you in this beautiful building and welcome you to the Seat of the Ismaili Imamat, which has been designated by my brother, His Highness the Aga Khan, as the Diwan of the Ismaili Imamat.”

Nazim Ahmad, Diplomatic Representative of the Ismaili Imamat to Portugal, expressed his appreciation to Portuguese leaders, past and present, for supporting Hazar Imam’s work over many decades. He also welcomed guests to share in the Jamat’s happiness on this occasion.

“Today, the worldwide Ismaili community celebrates Imamat Day, in honour of His Highness the Aga Khan’s leadership and guidance over the past six and a half decades. It is a day of joy, of happiness – a day which we are immensely pleased to share with all who have gathered here today.”

In attendance were the country’s most senior leaders, including current and former Portuguese presidents, prime ministers, foreign ministers, and mayors — many of whom have worked with the Ismaili community and AKDN over several decades.

Prince Amyn remarked that Hazar Imam and the Jamat will forever be grateful to them and the country for their kind acceptance and welcome, dating back to the 1970s. This generosity, he said, has enabled the community to successfully integrate into Portuguese society and contribute to its ongoing progress.

President Marcelo in his address paid tribute to the Jamat, and noted their dedication to service as exemplary.

“The Ismaili community in Portugal has about 10,000 citizens, fully integrated and imbued with the values of courage, innovation, persistence, and an openness to the world,” he said. “It is this spirit of communion that keeps us firm and united at all times, good and bad, without hesitation.

Through their endeavours in the fields of education, health, culture, and social welfare, the Ismaili community and AKDN agencies in Portugal have worked with compassion for many decades to improve the quality of life in the region and beyond.

“In keeping with the ethics of Islam,” Prince Amyn explained, “wherever we reside we ensure we are active in civil society, working in many fields of endeavour to offer our time, knowledge, expertise, and material resources to help better the cohesiveness of the communities and societies in which we live.”

“And in so doing,” he added, “our purpose is to uphold human dignity, to help improve the lives of the vulnerable, and to support the pluralism that exists here in Portugal, and which is crucial to the maintenance of a peaceful, compassionate and harmonious society.”

These shared values, a spirit of collaboration, and mutual respect continues to shape the relationship between the Ismaili Imamat and Portugal, a partnership that will continue to flourish in the years ahead. A focal point of this is the Diwan building nestled in the heart of Lisbon, which today stands as a symbol of the Ismaili Imamat’s enduring commitment to fostering peace, harmony, and progress around the world.

You wrote;"Imamat day is when the same, timeless, eternal & one, Noor e Imam e Zaman continues with Imam who is appointed on that day". Imam is appointed by his predecessor, it means till he becomes Imam he is without Noor or authority, because he can not act independently in presence of existing Imam.

If Noor is not transferred then why in Ismaili philosophy the word INVESTITURE has so importance? Correct Imams are born Imams but till predecessor is alive the would be Imam can not use authority of Imamat independently.

Obviously we can not have 2 Imams at the same time. One is Actual and the other is Potential! The potential is potential, it is only at the death of the Actual Imam that the Potential becomes Actual as that is the moment that the Noor decides to manifest itself in that new body.

There is no theory of having 2 Imams at the same time in Alamut and Post Alamut period. Some authors pre-Alamut wrote on that theory but it was never mainstream.
