Taariye Tu Taaran-Haar Khudaavand
O Lord! Grant me salvation, my savior

Zahra Hemani (15) recites Pir Sadardin's ginan Taariye Tu Taaran-Haar Khudaavand. JollyGul.com presents this with accompanying music and lyrics with English translations.

Zahra had submitted a beautiful vocals only devotional song Noor-e Ali, along with her 2 friends Ayra and Aleena, to JollyGul.com which we published for Imamat Day 2020. We were really impresssed with that song and contacted Zahra's parents Rahim and Ainun to see if they can get Zahra to recite a ginan with music for us. Zahra kindly agreed and we created a music track for Taariye Tu Taaran-Haar Khudaavand for her.

This is an elegant ginan by Pir Sadardin with a very simple, powerful and poignant message - Lord, you are the only savior, all worldly relationships and material attachments are of zero significance in the soul's journey, period.

Zahra Hemani has loved singing since a very early age and she likes to recite ginans in her Jamatkhana. Well now she will get extra "duties" from us, her time allowing, so the wider Jamat can enjoy listening to her graceful and pleasant voice.

Utar Khandd Maanhe - In the North Continent
Ginan By Pir Sadardin

JollyGul.com presents Nargis Balolia's beautiful rendition of Pir Sadardin's ginan "Utar Khandd Maanhe" (In the North Continent).

This melodious ginan beautifully recited by Nargis Balolia is about meditation to gain the understanding and recoginition of the Lord, following the True Guide and about leading a virtuous well-balanced life.

Explanation, interpretation of the ginan line: "utar khandd maahhe shaah nee jot jaagevaa, shaah naa purakh meele parketaa ho jirebhaai" (when the Lord's light shines in the north continent, then complete recognition and understanding of the Lord is attained, O dear brother). By "north continent", the allusion (figure of speech) is the region of the forehead between the two eye brows called 'bhamar goofaa' where the first spiritual experience can be experienced by observing a certain method of meditation.

The background imagery we have used for this video, Northern Lights, is a natural light display in the Earth's sky, predominantly seen in high-latitude Arctic region. They are a result of disturbances in the magnetosphere caused by solar wind.

“Ginans A to Z” Service

We are very fortunate, as a community, to have a rich collection of over 800 ginans which our Pirs and Sayyids composed over the last 700 years. This is part of a “wonderful tradition” of devotional hymns which we benefit from and cherish to date as part of our religious rituals.

“Ginans A to Z” Service is a comprehensive presentation of the recitations of all these ginans by various individuals. All recitations are without music and there is one (individual) recitation per ginan.

The goal of JollyGul “Ginans A to Z” Service is to ensure that all the ginans on this service should eventually play with lyrics and translations concurrently displayed on our custom audio player. This is a long term process; but we have already started in earnest and we have lyrics and translations synchronized for many ginans. This may take some time to complete, but there is no reason why the Jamat should not start enjoying the service whilst this is still work-in-progress. All the ginans have been uploaded, and many already have lyrics and translations displaying.

“Ginans A to Z” Service and
Ginan Central’s Master Index

Ginan Central is a very resourceful website run by Karim Tharani tenured librarian and faculty at the University of Saskatchewan. There is a lot of important work done by Ginan Central in terms of organizing recitations, literature and research about our ginans in an easy to find way for users as well as for preservation and study.

Ginan Central and JollyGul.com are independent entities. JollyGul.com has benefited enormously from the work done by Ginan Central in bringing our ginan services to the Jamat. If you have been enjoying our services, remember the saying ”if you want to look tall, stand on the shoulders of a giant”. Ginan Central efforts in the ginan field have been truly gigantic.

Ginan Central also has a Ginan Master Index where over 800 ginans are listed with title, composer name, multiple recitations of each ginan and link to translations, research and manuscripts. Each ginan has also been ascribed a Ginan Master ID.

JollyGul “Ginans A to Z” Service mirrors the Ginan Central Master Index of Ginans. So as an example, say you have finished listening to “ab teri mahobat lagi” with lyrics and translations display on “Ginans A to Z” on JollyGul.com and now you wish to hear recitations from other reciters as well as look at other resources and material that may exist for this ginan. All you have to do is click on the Master ID Number on that row and you will be taken to the Ginan Central resource page for that specific ginan!

Enjoy the service on your computer or smartphone. Click on the link below!

Darshan Deeyo Moraa Naath

O my Master grant me the Spiritual Vision

Taufiq Karmali soulfully recites Sayyida Imaam Begum's melodious and very popular ginan "Darshan Deeyo". The music composition is also done by Taufiq.

The ginan is a yearning for a vision of the Divine.

Bibi Tahira, commonly known as Sayyida Imaam Begum lived in the late 18th/19th century in the Indian sub-continent with a family lineage to Pir Hasan Kabiruddin. She composed a small number of ginans of great beauty and was an accomplished player of the sarangi musical instrument. Imaam Begum was the last in the line of the Pirs and Saiyads who composed ginans, and the only known female composer.

Si Harfi - 30 Alphabet Letters

Sayed Ahmed Shah's "Si Harfi" (30 Alphabet Letters) full granth recited by Taufiq Karmali can now be accessed with running verses and English translations through the custom audio player on JollyGul website or through JollyGul On-Demand (green) iPhone and Android App.

Si Harfi (30 letters) is an acrostic, a poem (or other form of writing) in which the first letter (or syllable, or word) of each line (or paragraph, or other recurring feature in the text) spells out a word, message or the alphabet.

It is not of Persian or Arabic origin, but a Punjabi form. The oldest verse of this kind is found in the Guru Granth Sahibji - a central religious scripture in Sikhism. Later, it appears to have become a popular verse-form of the Sufis of the Punjab. Some of them wrote more than two or three Si Harfi. It is actually not a short poem, but a collection of short poems. The letters of the alphabet are taken consecutively, and words whose initials they form are employed to give metrical expression to the poet’s ideas.

Si Harfi is mostly composed for divine praise, but also to convey a legend, story or history.

Sayed Ahmed Shah who lived in the 16th century also composed a few ginans, but none survived except his Si Harfi. From his Si Harfi, it appears that he knew Arabic and used the words, Allah, Ghani, Kha’laq, Noor and Fana. The name Si Harfi means thirty letters, which he has derived from Arabic. He also inserted the Persian words, such as Kudrat, Lashkar, Inayat, Farman, Karar and Banda.

Sayed Ahmed Shah composed Si Harfi on the pattern of the Shia Ismaili Muslims then prevailing thinking on meditation, with the tools of the yoga system, wherever it was applicable. It is an epistle (granth), with mystical and spiritual flavor. It utilizes vernacular and foreign languages in visualizing the esoteric message of Islam through an Ismaili lense.

Structurally, Sayed Ahmed Shah's Si Harfi granth is composed of 8 poems governed by a total of 120 lines for the whole granth. Each of the 8 poems contains 5 couplets (dohra) of 10 lines, a refrain (re tunhi) of one line and ends with a quatrain (chopai) of 4 lines (total 15 lines for each poem).

Please start enjoying the full "Si Harfi" by clicking on the link below or on our On-Demand (green) App which can be downloaded free from the Apple App Store (for iPhones) or Google Play Store (for Android) if you do not have it already installed on your smartphone.

Check out the alphabet progression aleef - first letter, be - second letter, te - third letter up to 30 as the granth progresses.

Enjoy!

"Cheto Cheto" Ginan-Garbi By Nargis Balolia (With Lyrics & Translations)

Cheto Cheto
Be Vigilant
JollyGul.com presents Nargis Balolia's wonderful rendition of Pir Shams Sabzwari's ginan-garbi "Cheto Cheto".

Pir Shams composed 28 garbis (in addition to many ginans) during his lifetime. Garbi is a Gujarati folk dance with individuals moving around in a circle and singing to the accompaniment of a rhythmic clap of hands and feet. Ismailis do not dance to the garbis in the present time. Nonetheless, garbis remain very popular in the devotional repertoire of Ismailis.

"Hardam Karo Abhiyaas" - Ginan By Nargis Balolia

Video:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f1ViiscrwW8

JollyGul.com presents Nargis Balolia's soulful rendition of Sayyida Imam Begum's ginan "Hardam Karo Abhiyaas".

Sayyida Imam Begum was the last in the line of the major composers of the ginans, and the only known female figure in this class, spent most of her life in or near Bombay, but is believed to have died in Karachi any time from the third quarter of the nineteenth century to the beginning of the twentieth. She composed a small number of ginans of great beauty, especially notable for their imploring tenderness and meditative intimacy. Evidently she was also an accomplished player of the fiddle (sarangi) and sang her hymns to the accompaniment of this instrument. One can not help but speculate how the ginan landscape would have been even more beautiful today, if historically we had more female composers.

Nargis Balolia lives in Toronto, Canada and started reciting ginans in Nairobi during her teenage years. She was initially trained and inspired by her mother Daulat Kassim-Lakha. Nargis has participated in various ginan competitions and mehfils. She has also recited a ginan in the presence of Mawlana Hazar Imam in Nairobi. Her husband Anil Balolia has been instrumental in producing all her ginan CDs which are very popular with the Jamat throughout the world. All the music compositions for Nargis Balolia's recitals are done by Sudhir Narain.

"Hardam Karo Abhiyaas" ginan is from the just released Volume 6 of her album by the same name which consists of a total of 5 wonderfully recited ginans. We really look forward to sharing all these ginans with the Jamat in video format in the next few weeks.

Hansapuree Ginan - Tazmin Kassam (With Piano & Ngoma Accompaniment)

Video:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OWSfeb67TS4

Hansapuree Nagaree Maanhe Maanddavo Rachaayo
In Multaan (the Lord) has constructed a canopy

Tazmin Kassam recites Pir Sadardin's very popular ginan "Hansapuree Nagaree Maanhe" with acoustic upright piano accompaniment by Afraaz Mulji and ngoma drums by Fujo Makaranga.

The video was recorded on our request at very short notice and we appreciate the help we received from Tazmin, Afraaz, Fujo and Alkarim to put this together quickly, on the fly. We wanted to tell a very powerful and inspiring story about Tazmin to our audience for Imamat Day 2021.

Afraaz Mulji is a multi-instrumentalist and composer. JollyGul.com is exploring various ideas with this gifted experimentalist to create and present productions in future that the Jamat can appreciate and enjoy. Fujo Makaranga is a talented ngoma player and teacher - the world certainly needs more ngoma right now. We plan to feature Fujo and the ngoma drum in our future major productions. Alkarim Pirmohamed is a skillful videographer, editor and producer.

Tazmin Kassam is an avid ginan reciter in Tanzania. Her vision started failing when she was only 14 and by the age of 18, she was clinically blind. This immense physical challenge did not stop her from continuing to learn and recite ginans. When she recites a ginan in Jamatkhana, a family member accompanies her to the stage. When religion teachers get stuck on some rarely recited or a difficult ginan, they know who to call. Tazmin is always able and happily willing to help.

Tazmin represents the very best amongst us and is a pillar of the community in Tanzania. The expression “love is blind” has many meanings. For Tazmin, it is a total unconditional and forgiving love towards all including our Creator. We all pray to our Creator for forgiveness; not too difficult. But have we ever thought of sometimes “forgiving” our Creator? Our Creator can give us that most severe test, something that no fellow human can come even close to dispensing. Many of us would say “why me?”. Very few would say our Creator knows best and “I forgive”. That would be a supreme test passed and there is absolutely no spiritual level beyond that. That forgiveness is the undeniable proof of our ultimate love for the divine.

We thank Tazmin for allowing us to share her story with the Jamat globally. We feel immensely proud of belonging to the same community as Tazmin - the Ismaili community. Enjoy this on JollyGul YouTube Expression Channel by clicking on the link below.

Imamat Day Mubarak!
