No flavours, odours, fragrances: What it’s like to live in a world without smell
By Cherylann Mollan
UPDATED ON FEB 21, 2021 07:10 AM IST
Divya Jakhar developed anosmia as one of the symptoms, and effects, of Covid-19. Meal times lost all meaning, and she felt disconnected from her body. Here’s her account.
Divya Jakhar, 32, distinctly remembers the last time she ate a packet of flavoured chips. It was on November 2, around noon. She didn’t enjoy the chips as much as she usually did.

“I could taste the saltiness but there was absolutely no flavour. I ate chip after chip, but there was nothing,” she says. She realised it was loss of smell causing this strangeness, and that was her first inkling that she might have Covid-19.

She sniffed at lemons and perfumes around the house; both had lost their fragrance. “It was strange and scary,” Jakhar says.

Over the next three months, the Gurgaon-based apparel designer would slowly get her sense of smell back (though she still can’t smell odours), but at the time she didn’t know if she ever would. “I was so scared and overwhelmed, I would break down at least once a day,” she says.

About 85% of patients with coronavirus experience partial or complete loss of smell, a condition called anosmia. “Hypotheses suggest this is because the virus enters the body through the ACE2 receptors present in the nasal mucosa, causing modifications in the olfactory neural fibres, which leads to anosmia,” says Dr Harish Chafle, a consultant intensivist and chest physician.

Jakhar tested positive two days after her last packet of chips, on November 4. She tested negative a week later. Her only other symptom during this time was a mild cough.

In an unexpected effect, though, her anosmia left her feeling disconnected with her body. She couldn’t smell odours or toothpaste or soap, couldn’t tell if her shampoo had lathered or she’d used the right amount of perfume.

As someone who loves food, Jakhar also hated not being able to taste what she was eating. It affected her appetite and mealtimes went from being something she looked forward to, to a chore she undertook just to ease the hunger pangs.

Her sense of smell, when it did begin to return, came back in tantalising wisps. On November 6, Jakhar got a whiff of an aroma from the cloves in her kadha, a spice-infused homemade remedy effective in soothing sore throats. The fragrance lingered for a second, then was gone again.

Gradually, as the anosmia faded, fragrances and then flavours returned.

When she could finally taste, it was a mango pickle that first registered. She added it to every meal just to have some flavour while eating. “And I don’t even like pickle,” she says.

By early February, Jakhar had regained her ability to smell and taste most things, but she still can’t smell bad odours, like rotting food or stinky socks. “Smells keep us safe because they tell you if something is fresh or stale or if there is a toxic substance in your vicinity,” she says. “Without this ability, I still feel a little unsafe.

Do the health benefits of bananas depend on their ripeness?

Bananas are an extraordinary wellspring of fiber, potassium, nutrient B6, nutrient C, cancer prevention agents and are known to be useful for cardiovascular and stomach related health.

Individuals can be quite certain on how ripe they like their bananas. A few people won't contact a banana with a darker spot, while others will take a stab at anything to get their bananas to ripen snappier.

While a few people like their bananas green, others love a soft dark colored banana. In any case, is there actually a contrast between the two?

Benefits of Unripe Bananas:

Since unripe bananas contain more starch, this means they have less sugar in them (which is usually why they don’t taste as sweet). This can be especially beneficial to people trying to avoid sugar, like someone with diabetes.

The starch in unripe bananas can make you feel full faster and keep you full longer. This makes them a great snack in between any meal. This can also help you burn more fat quickly.

Higher Probiotic Prevalence. Probiotics are all around good for you, especially for your colon. These can also help you absorb nutrients better (especially calcium).

Benefits of Ripe Bananas:

The brown spots on bananas indicate TNF (Tumor Necrosis Factor). TNF helps fight against abnormal cells in the body.

Your body can easily break down the carbohydrates in ripe bananas and they can even aid in digestion.

Antioxidants have various health benefits, including improved immunity, anti-aging effects, and anti-inflammatory properties. Regardless of the stage of ripeness, bananas pack a ton of nutrients into one fruit. They are a great snack that maintain blood sugar levels and can keep your energy levels up all day long.

Death, Through a Nurse’s Eyes

A short film offering a firsthand perspective of the brutality of the pandemic inside a Covid-19 I.C.U.

Watch film here:

https://www.nytimes.com/2021/02/24/opin ... 778d3e6de3

The short film above allows you to experience the brutality of the pandemic from the perspective of nurses inside a Covid-19 intensive care unit.

Opinion Video producer Alexander Stockton spent several days reporting at the Valleywise Medical Center in Phoenix. Two I.C.U. nurses wore cameras to show what it’s like to care for the sickest Covid patients a year into the pandemic.

So many Americans have died in hospitals without family by their side, but they were not alone. Nurses brush patients’ teeth, change their catheters and hold their hands in their final moments.

Cervical Cancer Awareness Month – January 2021

Cervical Cancer - ensure you get screened

There are around 3,200 new cervical cancer cases in the UK every year, that is more than eight every day. Find out more about cervical screening here...

Females aged 25-64 should be regularly screened by their GP. The screening should take place every three years for those under the age of 50, and every five years after that.
Cervical screening, also known as a ‘smear test’ are carried out by health professionals, who brush your cervix to collect some cells. These tests are carried out at GP practices and health centres.
Your ‘smear test’ checks for a virus called human papillomavirus (HPV). If your test shows that you have HPV, cervical cell changes and can be a sign of more serious health issues.
Smear tests, are shown to reduce the number of cervical cancers diagnosed by 70% due to detection.
Smear tests also identify if you are at a higher risk of developing cervical cancer, so that you can get further investigations or treatment.
We should continue to educate ourselves and other females amongst your friends and family who may not be aware the importance of regular cervical screening.

For more information regarding cervical cancer and screening, please visit: https://www.jostrust.org.uk/

I Got My Covid Vaccine. Now Can I Hug My Mom?

Three experts respond to questions from readers about what they can do after getting vaccinated.

People want to know what they can do after they are vaccinated against Covid-19.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recently shared guidelines for fully vaccinated Americans. The agency says vaccinated people can gather indoors in small groups without needing to mask. This includes meeting indoors with unvaccinated people from one other household as long as no one unvaccinated is at high risk for severe Covid-19.

In public, people who are vaccinated should still wear masks and practice distancing. Scientists are still learning how well the vaccines keep people from spreading the virus. If vaccinated people have been around someone with Covid-19, they do not need to stay away from others or get tested unless they have symptoms.

But blanket recommendations can’t account for the nuances of every person’s situation. That’s why we asked three experts from different disciplines — an airborne-transmission expert, Linsey Marr; and a virus expert, Juliet Morrison; an epidemiologist, Caitlin Rivers — to respond to readers’ questions about their postvaccination lifestyles. — Alexandra Sifferlin, senior staff editor

Does intermittent fasting increase life expectancy?

Dr. Longo has done a lot of animal experiments with intermittent fasting and longevity. Here are the results that he shared at last year’s Anti-aging Conference in Las Vegas.

- Obesity diminishes, because of the weight loss effect due to missing calories.
- Diabetes: insulin resistance becomes lower and blood sugar levels drop.
- High blood pressure reduced: many patients were able to reduce their medications or discontinue them
- Pain conditions improve as all kinds of pain disappears, an effect for which there is no explanation at this point
- Autoimmune diseases like MS and rheumatoid arthritis improve, likely because of the effect of increased stem cell circulation
- Prevention of heart attacks and strokes because of reduction of LDL, triglycerides and CRP
- Cancer cure rates improve by protecting normal cells and the bone marrow
- Longevity improved in mice with a 3-fold increase of their life span. Telomere length in humans was increased. Increased stem cells will find defective areas that need repair. This effect will open up a new chapter in medicine.

We know from these animal experiments that mice have a threefold increase in life span. But when heart attack rates and stroke rates improve in humans, cancer cure rates improve and telomere length in humans increase, there is strong evidence that it increases human life expectancy as well. It may take another 10 to 20 years before we have better statistics about the real survival advantage on this diet versus the Standard American diet. But what we know now is a start.

I am writing this in Las Vegas. Tomorrow the yearly Anti-Aging Conference is starting at the Venetian Palace. Dr. Longo will be the key note speaker tomorrow morning. If this adds anything significant I may add it below.

More info: intermittent fasting may benefit health.

Addendum Dec. 13, 2018: The lecture by Dr. Longo did provide more human data. Patients undergoing chemotherapy tolerate and survive chemotherapy much better when combined with the fasting mimicking diet (FMD). The human data is very similar to the mouse model data. This human research was done at the Charité Hospital in Berlin, Germany. Dr. Longo is starting to engage in clinical trials by partnering with physicians, but this will take several years to be published. In the meantime the FMD is an effective way to rejuvenate on an ongoing basis. Since last year I underwent 12 monthly courses of 5-day FMD per month. Dr. Longo says that even 3 to 4 courses of FMD per year would have a rejuvenating effect.

At first, many embark on the fasting journey for the almost immediate benefits of fat loss on the body. What a lot of people do not realise, is that Intermittent fasting has a profound effect on your longevity, providing benefits beyond what many other diets can. Realistically, many wonder why they hadn’t started this journey a long time ago, saving themselves endless hours wasted on restrictive and calorie controlled diets, filled with mindless bouts of exercise.

The health benefits of IF

The health benefits are astounding. Micro fasts support metabolic health by improving your insulin levels, & controlling body weight. Other benefits include cardiovascular support and an increased brain function. Short term fasts are a very credible and realistic life style choice, and can be implemented to suit anyones schedule.

Prolonged fasting on the other hand (more than 48 hours) have some amazing benefits. These include immune strength, longevity and healthy ageing. Prolonged fasting has been shown to work well with chemotherapy. One theory is that cancer cells thrive and develop on glucose. Therefore, prolonged fasts act to starve cancer cells of their food and support anti -cancer immune efforts.

Here is an interesting piece of information that appeared in the 2014 study in Cell indicating the difference between micro and prolonged multi-day fasting.

“The physiological changes caused by PF are much more pronounced than those caused by caloric restriction or fasting lasting 24 hours or less in part because of the requirement to fully switch to a fat- and ketone bodies-based catabolism after glycogen reserves are depleted during PF.” 5

Cell growth balance

It’s important to note that when we consume too many calories, our bodies get into an anabolic state. When we fast, we shift the balance towards a system that is catabolic (breaking down) pathway. This activates IGF-1 (insulin growth factor) and mTOR (mammalian target of rapamycin.)

This in itself, signals the cells and organelles in your body to become recycled and repurposed.

Reduced mTOR signals have been demonstrated to extend life span in different organisms. The mTOR inhibition has been largely identified as a longevity mechanism and the extension of lifespan. - Clinical interventions of ageing paper.

It has been noted by Dr Jason Fung that eating only fat (and no protein) could theoretically modulate mTOR positively. You can read more on this particular diet plan from any Dr Gundry’s books. He specialises in this, and makes it very easy to understand the medical jargon.

Inflammation

As we age, we’re more inclined to experience the effects of inflammation that may have began at a younger age. Sometimes this damage becomes so great, that it’s much like a chronic inflammatory illness. IF reduces inflammation and can improve cognitive function, preserving the brain against distress by regulation of inflammatory response pathway. IF therefore, is a great way to prevent age related damage that naturally occurs in the brain.

Final thoughts

Above we have outlined the many benefits of fasting. It is worth noting that there’s more than one way to trigger some of these responses. It’s also important to note that some of the health benefits occur during the fasting periods, and others are when we begin to eat normally again.

Remember that fasting primes our system for rejuvenation, but it’s the re-feeding that builds the new cells and organelles to increase health. Therefore, we must keep in mind that during the re-feeding period, we consume only best forms of protein, fats and carbohydrates according to our lifestyle and exercise habits. Naturally, as we fast for prolonged periods of time, we will not be inclined to binge eat when we are within the feeding period. Our bodies take in what they need, and utilise it accordingly.

I do hope this convinces you to pursue IF for longer, more vibrant health and longevity. I find that the constant challenge of exceeding my fasting times is very rewarding. Just think of all the wonderful benefits that are occurring, on a cellular level.

What foods help with Covid?

Image

Hi Karim,

The United States, with less than 5% of the world’s population, has endured 20% of the world’s reported COVID-19 deaths.

How could the world’s wealthiest country, with arguably the most advanced (and certainly the most expensive) healthcare system on the planet, have fared so poorly?

Might it be connected to the fact that the US also has one of the world’s highest rates of obesity and chronic illness?

And what do studies tell us about the foods you should eat (and avoid) if you want to stay healthy in these challenging times?

Here’s what the research says about food, health, and Covid-19.

Yours for wellness, in the pandemic and beyond,

Ocean Robbins

P.S. There’s still a lot we don’t know about Covid-19, and about which foods might be helpful or harmful. But a great deal of research has been done in the last year. And there’s never been a better time to put the power of healthy food choices into action. Get the whole story here.

Striving towards healthy living

Good nutrition can reduce the likelihood of developing health problems including obesity, heart disease, diabetes, and cancer, and supports strong immune systems.

Healthy living is a difficult state to achieve at the best of times. How can we create and sustain good health, whilst facing an unprecedented public health challenge which has left a trail of economic and social upheaval?

The coronavirus pandemic has fundamentally changed the way we live, work, and socialise, requiring many people to come to terms with a vastly different way of life. As Covid-19 took hold, the initial focus was on necessary measures to protect our health in the short term. However, our longer-term health and wellbeing has been brought into sharp focus, especially with emerging links between Covid-19 clinical syndrome and diabetes, obesity, and high blood pressure.

The work of the World Obesity Federation is raising awareness of factors beyond an individual’s control involved in the predisposition towards suffering with obesity. Highlighting these factors is reframing dialogue away from weight stigma and towards promoting acceptance and policy change. Despite the presence of genetic and environmental factors, lifestyle modification still remains the cornerstone of treatment and can lead to improved long-term health.

Nutrition

Nutrition is arguably the single largest contributor to healthy living. The Covid-19 pandemic has focused attention on the role of nutrition in the immune system. As highlighted recently by the World Health Organisation, good nutrition can reduce the likelihood of developing health problems including obesity, heart disease, diabetes, and cancer, and supports strong immune systems. However, due to the complexity of our immune systems, it cannot be modified by a specific nutritional intervention. Rather, adhering to a general healthy diet, including lots of fruit and vegetables, plays a vital role in supporting a well-functioning and effective immune system to help protect against infection and disease.

Decades of research has left little doubt regarding the health and planetary advantages of a predominately whole foods, plant-based approach. However, this message is often cluttered by the vast quantity of diets promoting sensationalised health claims. The best recipe for good health is combining regular physical activity with personalised nutrition – which is discovering the plant-based foods you enjoy and incorporating more of these into your existing routine.

Top tips at mealtimes

Aim for half the plate to be made up of vegetables

A quarter of the plate should be protein – either animal or plant based. This part of the meal is satiating which helps to reduce snacking

The remaining quarter of the plate can be made up of carbohydrates like wholewheat pasta, brown rice, potatoes. Avoid refined (white/processed) carbohydrates.

Developing healthy habits

Healthy living is about more than just getting fit and feeling better for a short while, it is about staying that way. The key to developing sustainable positive habits is to start slowly and change one thing at a time. Anyone will soon begin to feel the benefits that can be derived from eating more wholesome food and taking up 10 minutes of daily exercise. Build on your existing routine. For example, if you sometimes select fruit to eat, then try choosing more. Work around challenges and setbacks, and most importantly celebrate positive change —no matter how small — by rewarding yourself. According to Professor BJ Fogg, a leading behavioural scientist at Stanford University, the power of celebration combined with the feeling of success wires in and transforms small habits into lasting change.

Finding support

There are lots of ways to get the support you need to help stay healthy. An important step is finding a good doctor you are comfortable discussing your health with. Talk with your friends and family — having someone else accompany you on this journey can make all the difference in cultivating healthy living.

Has the Era of Overzealous Cleaning Finally Come to an End?

This week, the C.D.C. acknowledged what scientists have been saying for months: The risk of catching the coronavirus from surfaces is low.

When the coronavirus began to spread in the United States last spring, many experts warned of the danger posed by surfaces. Researchers reported that the virus could survive for days on plastic or stainless steel, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention advised that if someone touched one of these contaminated surfaces — and then touched their eyes, nose or mouth — they could become infected.

Americans responded in kind, wiping down groceries, quarantining mail and clearing drugstore shelves of Clorox wipes. Facebook closed two of its offices for a “deep cleaning.” New York’s Metropolitan Transportation Authority began disinfecting subway cars every night.

But the era of “hygiene theater” may have come to an unofficial end this week, when the C.D.C. updated its surface cleaning guidelines and noted that the risk of contracting the virus from touching a contaminated surface was less than 1 in 10,000.

“People can be affected with the virus that causes Covid-19 through contact with contaminated surfaces and objects,” Dr. Rochelle Walensky, the director of the C.D.C., said at a White House briefing on Monday. “However, evidence has demonstrated that the risk by this route of infection of transmission is actually low.”

The admission is long overdue, scientists say.

“Finally,” said Linsey Marr, an expert on airborne viruses at Virginia Tech. “We’ve known this for a long time and yet people are still focusing so much on surface cleaning.” She added, “There’s really no evidence that anyone has ever gotten Covid-19 by touching a contaminated surface.”

The top 8 foods for a healthy brain

Image

Hi Karim,

Researchers at Rush University in Chicago evaluated the diet and mental function of 950 elderly people.

After adjusting for such variables as education, exercise, and family history of dementia, the researchers found that those participants who consistently ate leafy green vegetables (like spinach and kale) halted their mental decline by an average of 11 years.

This means they were cognitively 11 years younger.

And leafy greens are just one of the foods that have been proven to help fight cognitive impairment and dementia, and to support brain health.

How many of them are you already eating?

Can We Learn to Live With Germs Again?

The health of our bodies and microbiomes may depend on society’s return to lifestyles that expose us to bacteria, despite the risks.

The video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O1gdRYpI1LU is intended to comfort and reassure, but it feels undeniably dystopian.

A person clad in goggles, a mask and a reflective vest dusts a plane’s cabin with a fine mist of disinfectant. The chemical spray is charged with “breakthrough” electrostatic technology that helps it coat every surface and lay waste to any microscopic threats that may be lurking, specifically the coronavirus.

United Airlines produced and uploaded this particular video last April, but the sanitization regimen is not unique. Mass transportation authorities and countless businesses have gone to similar lengths in an effort to abide by guidelines and to mollify a rightly fearful public. And for the most part, the efforts have been welcome. One of the top comments posted to the United video reads, “Even after this pandemic you guys should keep this up.”

For more than a century — since scientists first learned that unseen germs cause infection and illness — we’ve tended to think of sterile environments as the safe ones. And at the start of the outbreak, when we didn’t know any better, it was sensible to disinfect as much as possible, including our groceries, clothing and personal spaces.

It took time for coronavirus researchers to figure out that the risk of surface transmission is low — the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention only recently pegged it at generally less than one in 10,000 — and that masks, physical distancing and ventilation are our most-effective safeguards.

Despite the now consensus recognition that air transmission, not surface spread, is more important, most pandemic sanitation practices have continued. We continue to annihilate every microbe in our midst, even though most are harmless. The New York City subway, for example, has been undergoing a 24-hour cleaning protocol that includes ultraviolet light and a variety of disinfecting solutions. Survey data shows most subway riders feel safer because of it.

But some health experts are watching this ongoing onslaught with a mounting sense of dread. They fear that many of the measures we’ve employed to stop the virus, even some that are helpful and necessary, may pose a threat to human health in the long run if they continue.

Their worries center on the human microbiome — the trillions of bacteria that live on and inside our bodies. They say that excessive hygiene practices, inappropriate antibiotic use and lifestyle changes such as distancing may weaken those communities going forward in ways that promote sickness and imperil our immune systems. By sterilizing our bodies and spaces, they argue, we may be doing more harm than good.

In January, a global consortium of health researchers published a paper in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS) in which they raise the alarm about the microbial fallout that may follow in the pandemic’s wake. “We’re starting to realize that there’s collateral damage when we get rid of good microbes, and that has major consequences for our health,” says B. Brett Finlay, first author of the PNAS paper and a professor in the department of microbiology and immunology at the University of British Columbia.

Almost everything we know about the microbiome is uncertain, including how our activities and environments influence its makeup. But Dr. Finlay and others argue that our collective health may depend on our willingness to holster our sanitizers and cleansers, moderate our use of bacteria-slaying drugs, and resume old habits that nourish our microbial communities. In other words, we’re going to have to live with germs again.

Best foot forward: The benefits of walking

Humans are not only made to move — it is essential to our survival. The World Health Organization attributes over 3 million deaths each year to insufficient physical activity. The more we move, the more we boost the health of our bodies and minds, and the more alive we feel. Walking is one of the simplest ways to stay active.

Walking regularly can burn calories, reduce risk of heart disease, lower blood sugar, and boost stamina and immune function. Yet aside from the well-known physical benefits, walking is also beneficial to mental health, creativity, and to optimal performance at work and school.

“Methinks the moment my legs begin to move, my thoughts begin to flow,” said Henry Thoreau, accurately describing a feeling many of us have experienced, and highlighting the connections between moving and functioning.

The philosophers of ancient Greece also linked thinking to walking. Socrates and Aristotle conducted lectures while strolling, carrying books along with them. Other dedicated walkers in history included Albert Einstein and Virginia Woolf, while modern-day adherents feature Natalie Portman and Heidi Klum.

According to the American Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, moderate to vigorous activity such as walking can improve our sleep, thinking, and learning, while also reducing symptoms of anxiety.

When we go for a walk, we perform better on tests of memory and attention; our brain cells build new connections, staving off the usual withering of brain tissue that comes with age, wrote Ferris Jabr in an article published by the New Yorker.

“We can actively change the pace of our thoughts by deliberately walking more briskly or by slowing down,” Jabr explained. Thus our attention is left to observe and wonder, helping us generate new ideas and have strokes of insight.

Research suggests that it’s possible to improve mood and self-esteem with only a very short time out in nature, even just five minutes. One study concluded that a short lunchtime walk in a park is just as beneficial as specific relaxation exercises, and can assist employees to recharge in order to perform better at work.

Although walking is the most simple of exercises, it is not necessarily easy for everyone. Some might experience mobility challenges, time constraints, and adverse weather conditions. But even for those who are not currently active, beginning a walking habit is an achievable goal. The key is to start with small steps, quite literally!

You could make it part of your daily routine, by ambling to the shops instead of driving, using stairs instead of an elevator, or taking a short stroll after lunch or dinner.

While strolling, some people listen to podcasts or audiobooks, or catch up on phone calls. You might be surprised at how quickly time can pass while focusing on listening to something or someone when out and about.

There are also plenty of smartphone apps to help design routes, measure distances and speed, set targets, and assist with motivation. Another way to boost motivation levels could be to join a walking community. Just as a book club keeps readers on track and creates a shared experience, a walking club can have a similar effect.

In this vein, the Aga Khan Health Board (AKHB) and Youth & Sports Board (AKYSB) in the UK recently launched a Walking for Wellness initiative: an eight-week challenge to improve mental, emotional, and physical health, and to strengthen general wellbeing. Open to all ages and abilities, the aim is to form a group who motivate one another, track progress over time, and celebrate successes.

“The initiative has brought together Ismailis from around the UK jurisdiction through a smartphone app and has encouraged us all to enjoy the multiple benefits to walking, share daily walks and in particular, beautiful spots in nature,” said Natasha Jiwa from AKYSB’s health and wellness team.

Stepping out into nature and wild greenery is ideal, although built-up urban areas also offer interesting routes, along heritage trails, rivers and canals, or through parks and gardens. Roaming outside can help to clear the mind and organise our thoughts.

In Singapore, the Ismaili Council for the Far East organised a walk focused on mindfulness — no technology allowed. Participants laced up their sneakers and walked in the lush, picturesque Botanic Gardens of Singapore. Adults and children alike participated in a physically distanced format, while trainers facilitated multiple activities that enabled the participants to take charge of their physical and mental wellbeing, including mindful breathing exercises and discussion.

“This was a powerful experience to press pause and live in the moment. Breathing exercises were a perfect way to start. Team leads were calm, soft spoken and motivating, and helped set the tone for the walk,” said Nadya Karmali, a member of the Far East Jamat.

Taking the time to pause from our daily routine and responsibilities, away from devices and screens, can also help to offer a sense of perspective - much needed at this strange and uncertain time.

“On days when I need some perspective, I’ll stroll while looking at the sun, the trees, or the water,” wrote Deborah Grayson Riegel recently in the Harvard Business Review. “Those views remind me to reflect on the expanse of the universe, to appreciate the beauty of nature, and prompt me to consider how much world there still is for me to explore (when it’s safe to do so).”

So today — as soon as is practically possible — get out into the sunlight and fresh air, take a few deep breaths, and remember how good it feels to be alive.

Interview with Azmina Govindji, registered dietitian and consultant nutritionist

In this interview with The Ismaili, Azmina Govindji discusses nutrition and healthy eating for better physical and mental health, and shares advice on how to adjust lifestyle choices to enjoy a better quality of life.

For much of the past year, we have been focused on a virus — a communicable disease. However, as the world begins to emerge from the Covid-19 pandemic, when should we begin to return our attention to non-communicable diseases and other health risks?

The Covid-19 pandemic has created a significant shift in our circumstances and has undoubtedly meant that lifestyles have changed. Many people are less active, some may have resorted to comfort eating, while others might be doing more home cooking. In my opinion, this situation presents an opportunity to create healthy eating habits that benefit ourselves and our families in the long term.

We may have been trying to eat better for years and just not had the motivation to put it into practice — we can now give it our full attention. And as we begin to return to some sort of normality, we can make a commitment to ourselves to treat our body with more care and attention.

Preventing non-communicable diseases

As countries worldwide have been dealing with the problems of the Covid-19 pandemic, it can be difficult to imagine anything worse than communicable or infectious diseases. However in reality, today we are facing the dual burden of communicable and non-communicable diseases (NCDs).

These diseases impact a person's health and can affect a population's productivity, economic growth, and social development. While infectious diseases spread from a contact point, NCDs are challenging to trace since they result from a combination of genetic, environmental, and behavioural factors. Thus, it is important to understand the ways in which NCDs impact our lives and what steps can be taken to prevent or lessen the burden of these diseases.

NCDs include ailments that cannot be passed from one person to another, and tend to be chronic — meaning they remain over time and symptoms may recur based on specific triggers. NCDs are dangerous because they can occur at any phase within a person’s life and may exist without prior knowledge. Additionally, living with NCDs can become expensive because of the cyclical need for medication. Examples of NCDs are diabetes, cardiovascular disease, chronic respiratory diseases (such as asthma), cancer, and mental health conditions. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), NCDs take the lives of approximately 41 million people each year, out of which nearly 75% (32 million) live in low to middle-income countries.

For members of the Ismaili community living in developing countries such as Pakistan, the Aga Khan Health Board (AKHB) is tasked with promoting healthier living to mitigate the risk of NCDs. One of the initiatives taken by AKHB in Pakistan to minimise NCD risk within the Jamat is the ‘Healthy Heart’ programme through which certified volunteers check the blood pressure, heart rate, and body mass index (BMI) level of Jamati members. Individuals attain a regular snapshot of their health which allows for early detection of any NCD. Additionally, the Jamat is able to obtain laboratory tests at a lower cost and has access to physicians who analyse reports and suggest appropriate treatments.

While treatment and care are available for people diagnosed with NCDs, to maintain a good quality of life, prevention is the best cure. Since prevention against certain NCDs attributed to genetic dispositions is challenging, and changing one’s environment or socio-economic situation is not entirely feasible, it is in one’s own hands to make certain lifestyle choices that can reduce the risks of NCDs. These interventions include:

The Psychedelic Revolution Is Coming. Psychiatry May Never Be the Same.

Psilocybin and MDMA are poised to be the hottest new therapeutics since Prozac. Universities want in, and so does Wall Street. Some worry a push to loosen access could bring unintended consequences.

It’s been a long, strange trip in the four decades since Rick Doblin, a pioneering psychedelics researcher, dropped his first hit of acid in college and decided to dedicate his life to the healing powers of mind-altering compounds. Even as antidrug campaigns led to the criminalization of Ecstasy, LSD and magic mushrooms, and drove most researchers from the field, Dr. Doblin continued his quixotic crusade with financial help from his parents.

Dr. Doblin’s quest to win mainstream acceptance of psychedelics took a significant leap forward on Monday when the journal Nature Medicine published the results of his lab’s study on MDMA, the club drug popularly known as Ecstasy and Molly. The study, the first Phase 3 clinical trial conducted with psychedelic-assisted therapy, found that MDMA paired with counseling brought marked relief to patients with severe post-traumatic stress disorder.

The results, coming weeks after a New England Journal of Medicine study that highlighted the benefits of treating depression with psilocybin, the psychoactive ingredient in magic mushrooms, have excited scientists, psychotherapists and entrepreneurs in the rapidly expanding field of psychedelic medicine. They say it is only a matter of time before the Food and Drug Administration grants approval for psychoactive compounds to be used therapeutically — for MDMA as soon as 2023, followed by psilocybin a year or two later.

After decades of demonization and criminalization, psychedelic drugs are on the cusp of entering mainstream psychiatry, with profound implications for a field that in recent decades has seen few pharmacological advancements for the treatment of mental disorders and addiction. The need for new therapeutics has gained greater urgency amid a national epidemic of opioid abuse and suicides.

Hi Karim,

If someone drives a car into a brick wall, the death certificate might say “blunt force trauma by brick wall.” But we all know that the real cause of death was poor driving.

The same principle applies to the modern diet. Conditions like heart disease, dementia, cancer, obesity, and type 2 diabetes are all-too-often the predictable symptoms of the modern industrialized diet.

The truth is that our food choices are fueling devastating levels of chronic illness.

It turns out that there are 4 big lies that most people believe — that are fueling this humanitarian disaster. And more importantly, there are 10 big breakthroughs that could save millions of lives (and trillions of dollars in medical bills!).

Indian doctors warn against cow dung as COVID cure
Amit Dave

People pray after applying cow dung on their bodies during "cow dung therapy" on outskirts of Ahmedabad
By Amit Dave

AHMEDABAD, India (Reuters) - Doctors in India are warning against the practice of using cow dung in the belief it will ward off COVID-19, saying there is no scientific evidence for its effectiveness and that it risks spreading other diseases.

The coronavirus pandemic has wrought devastation on India, with 22.66 million cases and 246,116 deaths reported so far. Experts say actual numbers could be five to 10 times higher, and citizens across the country are struggling to find hospital beds, oxygen, or medicines, leaving many to die for lack of treatment.

In the state of Gujarat in western India, some believers have been going to cow shelters once a week to cover their bodies in cow dung and urine in the hope it will boost their immunity against, or help them recover from, the coronavirus.

In Hinduism, the cow is a sacred symbol of life and the earth, and for centuries Hindus have used cow dung to clean their homes and for prayer rituals, believing it has therapeutic and antiseptic properties.

"We see ... even doctors come here. Their belief is that this therapy improves their immunity and they can go and tend to patients with no fear," said Gautam Manilal Borisa, an associate manager at a pharmaceuticals company, who said the practice helped him recover from COVID-19 last year.

He has since been a regular at the Shree Swaminarayan Gurukul Vishwavidya Pratishthanam, a school run by Hindu monks that lies just across the road from the Indian headquarters of Zydus Cadila, which is developing https://www.reuters.com/article/health- ... NKCN2510MP its own COVID-19 vaccine.

As participants wait for the dung and urine mixture on their bodies to dry, they hug or honour the cows at the shelter, and practice yoga to boost energy levels. The packs are then washed off with milk or buttermilk.

Doctors and scientists in India and across the world have repeatedly warned against practizing alternative treatments for COVID-19, saying they can lead to a false sense of security and complicate health problems.

"There is no concrete scientific evidence that cow dung or urine work to boost immunity against COVID-19, it is based entirely on belief," said Dr JA Jayalal, national president at the Indian Medical Association.

"There are also health risks involved in smearing or consuming these products - other diseases can spread from the animal to humans."

There are also concerns the practice could contribute to the spread of the virus as it involved people gathering in groups. Madhucharan Das, in charge of another cow shelter in Ahmedabad, said they were limiting the number of participants.

Truth - No one diet is right for everyone

Image

Hi Karim,

Have you ever noticed how some people can drink coffee right before bed and then sleep like a baby?

And how other people can’t drink any coffee after noon if they want to sleep that night at all?

Or how some people love organic tofu and others get terrible gas when they eat it?

Have you ever wondered why?

The fact is, each of us is unique.

And learning to listen to the signals your body sends you is one of the greatest keys to health and happiness.

My dad and colleague, bestselling author, John Robbins, created a short video explaining how this works and why it’s important to learn from your body's wisdom.

The Healing Power Of Water

Hi Karim,

The famed martial arts master Bruce Lee once said:

"Be like water making its way through cracks. Do not be assertive, but adjust to the object, and you shall find a way around or through it."

Wise words.

Water is the guest of honor for today's piece. We're going to get into the nitty gritty of how to make sure you're getting the best water into your glass and why it's so vital to your health!

Did you ever wonder why so many of us love to walk along the ocean? Perhaps it's an innate survival instinct that brings us that feeling of calm and balance when looking out on a majestic body of water.

Studies have shown that people who live near water are 10 percent happier. Researchers from the University of Exeter -- in England -- found that people who lived within a mile from the sea were 22 percent less likely to experience mental health disorders, such as anxiety and depression. Isn't that incredible?

Just being near these "blue spaces" -- as scientists refer to them -- increases our happiness.

Marine biologist, Wallace J. Nichols, calls the "immeasurable sense of peace that we feel around water" our "blue mind."

Water gives and teaches us so much -- but the simple everyday-ness of it makes it easy to take for granted. That said, we all know there's nothing quite like that feeling of drinking cold, clear water when you're parched. Or the sheer joy of diving into a crystal clear lake on a sweltering day.

We need H20.

The truth is, without water, we can only live a matter of days -- that's how urgently our body relies on water to survive. Food on the other hand? We can get by without eating for months -- so long as we're drinking at least 1.5 liters of water per day.

To truly thrive and live our best lives, some experts believe we really should be hydrating way more than that -- as much as 15.5 cups (3.7 liters) of water a day for men, and 11.5 cups (2.7 liters) a day for women.

And you know what they say about quality over quantity? Well, when it comes to water, the same goes.

Essential qualities to look for in your water:

Pure, mineral-rich, clean water offers incredible benefits for your body and mind. Here's what you should be looking for in your drinking water:

- It's free of contaminants like fungi, bacteria, and parasites
- It's rich in essential minerals like sulfur, manganese, and calcium
- It's alkaline, which means it has a pH above 7 and may offer added benefits...

‘I drink cow urine every day. That is why I do not have Covid right now’ says Indian ruling party politician
Pragya Singh Thakur in Bhopal, India, (FILE PHOTO) © REUTERS/Raj Patidar

An Indian MP has encouraged citizens to drink cow urine, like she does herself, to protect themselves against Covid-19 and lung infections, despite medical experts urging people not to use alternative treatments.
In a widely circulated video, believed to have been recorded on Monday, Pragya Singh Thakur, an MP from Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, extolled the virtues of drinking cow urine.

“If we drink the urine of Indian cows, it reduces infection in our lungs,” Thakur said, adding “I drink cow urine every day. That is why I do not have Covid right now.”

The MP, who is a member of the Indian ruling BJP party, reportedly made the statement during a hospital visit in which she oversaw the delivery of 25 oxygen concentrators. She made the statement without a mask despite the prevalence of Covid-19.

Thakur had made headlines in recent weeks for reportedly going missing while her constituents fought a deadly wave of Covid-19.

In an equally bizarre episode earlier in May, BJP lawmaker Surendra Singh also urged people to drink cow urine. He stated that people should mix 50ml of cow urine with cold water and drink it daily to achieve “natural immunity” to the virus.

The lawmaker recorded himself preparing his recipe and drinking it. “People should remember god and do what older generations did to treat such things,” he said, questioning scientific progress against the virus.

Indian doctors have attempted to quash claims that the excrement of Hinduism’s holy animal is an effective alternative treatment for Covid-19. “There is no concrete scientific evidence that cow dung or urine work to boost immunity against Covid-19, it is based entirely on belief,” Dr JA Jayalal, national president at the Indian Medical Association, told Reuters last week.

“There are also health risks involved in smearing or consuming these products – other diseases can spread from the animal to humans,” he added.

Smearing yourself in cow dung won’t cure Covid, Indian doctors warn, as country’s seven-day case rate hits new high
Over the last month, India has faced a huge surge in Covid-19 cases. On Monday, authorities said that there were 281,386 cases over the past 24 hours, marking the first time daily infections had dropped 300,000 since April 21.
