What is KhojaWiki
KhojaWiki.org is a not-for-profit collaborative effort - a systematic collection of living people's stories about their own experiences and their recollection of the stories of their parents and other ancestors, in their own words, using the power of the internet.
The Khojas of Western India are recognized by historians and other scholars as a distinct socio-cultural group, with their own written language-Khojki and a tradition of preserving spoken and written Kutchi and Gujarati, of literature, song and dance and finally, a very unique naming tradition that preserves their identity. The Khojas have had an amazing journey of migration through the centuries - from small traders and farmers in Multan and Sind into laborers and street vendors after moving with their ruler's conquest of Kutch and Kathiawar in the 1500's and later,as traders, merchants, industrialists into the the rest of India, Asia, Africa under British imperial dominion. That has been followed by the current diaspora to the West where they continue to thrive, often as businessmen and professionals.
This long history is made up of thousands incredibly rich personal stories of courage, sacrifice, strongly-held family values and a fine tradition of public service or "sewa". And these stories - of each Khoja person and family - is a unique treasure, not only for future generations of that family but also of the whole community.
Unfortunately,in these multiple transitions, the traditional way of passing down information from parent to child has been lost and sadly, our collective memory sits broken. And as more of our elders die, they take with them important links in our complex identity - the very answers that our children and friends demand - as who we are and how we got here. And we all know that feeling-that time is taking away something that is being lost forever.
What Is the Khoja Oral History Project?
It is a late but urgent response to this dilemma - KhojaWiki.org codifies these family stories, connects them with other peoples stories, provides relevant information on places and highlights historically events at that time, using live links, just like Wikipedia - a searchable wikipedia of Khoja families stories. Finally, it creates a printable Family Tree of unlimited generations and a handy feature to find links between individuals. For privacy and safety, no contact information is publicly provided.
So, computer-literate contributors create their own family history pages for each person and upload photos, documents,as well as audio/video materials etc. The user-creator only can change or add information etc. at any time. For elders, volunteer journalists (interviewers) help the seniors recall names,dates,events, etc. which are then uploaded onto khojaWiki.org. Other registered users help write essays, do research on families and also monitor the site. To help build our collective knowledge, such essays can be amended or added to by any registered user but will only be uploaded after review by other users.
The whole collection, including the family stories, the essays, as well as photographs, documents and audio/video material will be freely available on the KhojaWiki.org for the use of those families and their future generations, as well as everyone else, including scholars of history.

Many immigrants turn to entrepreneurship after immigrating to Canada, and the upcoming Immigrant Entrepreneur and Small Business Fair on Wednesday, Oct. 19, 2016, hosted by DIVERSEcity Community Resources Society, is meant to support such aspiring immigrant and refugee entrepreneurs.
There can be many barriers as an immigrant entrepreneur. Without the proper network and support, a business idea will only be that — an idea.
For an immigrant, it’s important to do the research, figure out the financials and know the right people. Mawani lays out three tips that can increase your chance of success in business in Canada.

How many of you out there have been faced with, or even tortured by, the challenge of trying to replace yourself? The challenge of succession planning is real and maybe hardest for us entrepreneurs and social innovators because we are so emotionally attached and invested in our work. As such, we tend to hold on too long, are way too picky about our potential successors, and have a hard time letting go.
For those reasons and more, I am so excited to announce that I will no longer be running CSI Toronto and will be letting go of operations (but not leaving CSI!) because…

Adil Dhalla is the new Executive Director of CSI Toronto!
Adil joined the CSI team over three years ago as our Director of Culture – one of the first roles of its kind globally. In addition to stewarding CSI’s culture, Adil has led several major projects at CSI including the $4.3-million Community Bond Campaign to purchase 192 Spadina, and the development of CSI’s new online space, socialinnovation.org. He is a master of experience design, a brilliant communicator, and an exciting young leader with a profound desire for inclusive and accessible communities.
Adil was recently named a BALLE Fellow, becoming the first Muslim to ever receive the honour. In addition to his role at CSI, he Chairs the Board for the award-winning social enterprise the StopGap Foundation, and also co-founded Camp Reset, the acclaimed summer camp for adults that exists at the intersection of play and wellness. Previous to CSI, Adil worked as a community volunteer for the Obama campaign, helped introduce micro lending technology to rural Tanzanian farmers, and became a pioneer in the mobile video space when he launched My City Lives, a local video platform that had a presence in 250 cities worldwide.
In his new role, Adil will be responsible for all four of CSI Toronto’s spaces, programming, events, marketing and the CSI Cafe. In addition, Adil will continue to lead our experience and event design, which includes everything from Community Summits to Six Degrees to the final farewell event at Honest Ed’s, Toronto for Everybody.

He holds a BA from McGill University, an MPhil from the University of Cambridge, and a DPhil from the University of Oxford. Prior to a career in academia, he worked for various organizations including OXFAM Canada, the Government of Ontario, and the Municipality of Metropolitan Toronto.

Karima Jivraj started her career with the Royal Bank of Canada in 1990. After leaving the RBC in 1995 and doing some travelling, Karima came back to focus on a career in facilities management with companies like Purolator, Rogers, Seeton Shinkewski Design Group. Xanatrex Technologies and finishing off at the UBC Building Operations department in August of 2010.
In March 2011, after several months of intense hands on training, Karima became a franchise owner and opened a Bosley’s by PetValu store in New Westminster at Columbia Square. Her award-winning, community-focused, business is the premier destination for those with loveable furry family. Since opening her business in 2011, Karima and her team assist several local rescues and the New Westminster Animal Shelter by arranging pet adoptions into forever-homes and doing fundraising and community outreach events.
In a short-time, Karima has made a strong, positive impact in the community, developing relationships with locals and their furry friends. The Bosley’s New West team can be seen throughout the year at several key community events like the Pawfest, Downtown New Westminster events, and in store events. The store is also well known for popular annual community events.

Ali Velshi has been hired by MSNBC starting this week, channel president Phil Griffin announced Tuesday. Velshi is a Northern Secondary School alumnus and his sister, Ishrath Velshi, lives locally and was a candidate for Council for Ward 26 in 2014. His father Murad Velshi was MPP for Don Mills from 1987 to 1990. As a young reporter, Ali Velshi was employed by CFTO-TV and by the CTV Network. He most recently worked for Al Jazeera America, which closed down earlier this year. He worked for CNN and in 2011 hosted American Morning in an anchor-trio with Carole Costello and Christine Romans. In making the announcement, Griffin said Ali Velshi’s “sharp economic analysis will be a valuable asset to MSNBC as we dig deeper into every angle of the news and build on our ratings momentum in all dayparts”.

Last year Trillium Health Partners established the Gordon and Donna Feeney Centre for Seniors’ Medical Psychiatry through a transformational investment of $5 million. Their new Centre supports the work of Trillium Health Partners within the Medical Psychiatry Alliance, an unprecedented mental health care partnership between Trillium Health Partners, the Hospital for Sick Children, the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (Toronto), and the University of Toronto.
Trillium Health Partners’ partnership commitment to the Medical Psychiatric Alliance is to lead the Collaborative Care Program. Because patients with combined physical and mental illnesses comprise more than 25 per cent of the practices of family physicians and medical subspecialties, it was essential to integrate and coordinate the collaboration of care between all clinicians—family physicians to psychiatrists to specialists to social workers.
Front-Line Social Work for Our Seniors
Enter Shallah Jamal-Somani, a social worker with our hospital for the past fifteen years and now also the first social worker for the Seniors’ Medical Psychiatry Out-Patient Collaborative. Jamal-Somani was the ideal choice for this new, important position because she was a clinician with Hamilton Health Sciences and Mount Sinai Hospital before coming to THP.
Jamal-Somani refers to herself as a “front-line social worker” because she visits the homes of seniors who are living with mental illness. Once there, she gradually builds trust with the seniors and then provides much needed supports, including counselling, education, advocacy, and helps them navigate the health care system they have difficulty with.
“I’m honoured to be a part of such a meaningful program,” says Jamal-Somani. “I love being involved in creating system-wide changes for our seniors with mental illnesses and distressing physical symptoms.”

Completing the trio of visionaries behind Waterworks is Noorez Lalani, President at MOD Developments Inc. Before Noorez began the foray into real estate development, he received a law degree from the University of Windsor and later entered the Ontario bar. In addition to a law degree, Noorez also holds a Masters of Business Administration from the Schulich School of Business where he began his specialization in Real Estate Finance and Development. Prior to joining MOD, Noorez worked as an account manager for the Toronto Dominion Bank Real Estate Group where he was responsible for underwriting and managing various residential construction loans in the home building and condominium sectors. Convenience retailing, or life for that matter, can be summed up by the two words of “hope” and “love,” said NACS 2016-17 Chairman Rahim Budhwani during the 2016 NACS Show Closing General Session today.
“Hope is the constant of all things. It’s the only thing that stays with you when everything else feels lost. And without love, life has no meaning, no flavor, no passion,” said Budhwani, who is CEO of 6040 LLC, which operates convenience stores, including the Encore brand, in Alabama.
Budhwani used the name of his company to explain the concepts of both love and hope. Originally, he developed the company with a partner who would work in their first store and own 60% of the company while Rahim, the silent partner with another career, would own 40%—thus the name 6040.
But just before the deal closed, his partner had a change of heart. Budhwani was now a 100% owner of a convenience store business—along with his full-time job as a computer programmer, his grad school studies and his newly expanded family with a newborn daughter.

Calgary man hopes to make space dreams come alive
Many people dream about becoming an astronaut and few realize just how difficult it is to achieve that dream but one Calgary man hopes to beat the curve.
Tahir Merali was first inspired to become an astronaut when he visited the Kennedy Space Centre when he was five years old.
He then met Canadian astronaut Roberta Bondar when he was seven, pushing him to eventually complete a series of degrees, including one in engineering and then a masters in space management.

ISLAMABAD: US President Barack Obama has congratulated renowned Pakistani scholar and poet Professor Allama Nasiruddin Hunzai on his 100th birth anniversary and hoped his scholarly work will further broaden the vision of people in the years to come.
In a letter from the White House, President Obama wrote: "To centenarian Hunzai we are pleased to join your family and friends in wishing you a happy 100th birthday."
Obama said: "As you celebrate this extraordinary milestone we hope you reflect on the many memories you have made over the past century. Your generation has shown the courage to persevere through depression and war and the vision to broaden our liberties through changing times. We are grateful for your contributions to the American society and we wish you all the best for the coming year."
Nasir Hunzai born in village Hyderabad of Hunza valley in 1917 is the author of over one hundred books on various aspects of the Quranic wisdom mainly on spiritualism and sufism.
In recognition of his extraordinary literary services the government of Pakistan had conferred upon him Sitara-e-Imtiaz in 2001. Sixty of his books have been translated to English by scholar Dr Faquir Hunzai and Rashida Hunzai.
Book of Healing, the Wise Quran, the World of Humanity and Balance of Realities have got attention in research institutions of the western world.
Nasir Hunzai has composed first alphabets for Burushaski an isolate and very old language spoken in Gilgit Baltistan besides authoring Burushaski Deewan a first of its kind of this language.
It is indeed a source of spiritual inspiration for the people of various cultures.
Half of this Deewan has been translated to English titled Flowers of Paradise.
He has also compiled first Burushaski Urdu dictionary jointly published by Karachi University and Burushaski Research Academy in three volumes.
He is also recipient of titles Hakimul Qalam Lisan-e-Qaum and Baba-e-Burushaski conferred by Government of Gilgit Baltistan and other social organizations.
He is also co author of first Burushaski German dictionary published by Hydel Berg University Germany and co author of book Hunza Proverbs compiled by Professor Tiffu a Canadian researcher.
He has written several articles on women folk for enhancing their status.
Being a reformer he introduced the concept of volunteers for the first time in Hunza and established first volunteer organization in village Hyderabad of Hunza in 1957 besides establishing first girls school on self help basis in the village.

Dr. Mirza Datoo, who hails from a tiny village in northern Tanzania, has been recognized by the Australian government.
The former Cootamundra general practitioner has been presented with the Medal of the Order of Australia for years of service to medicine in rural New South Wales.
In all 14 general practioners were honoured for more than 500 years of combined service to the country. He can now proudly add the letters OAM after his name.
“It makes me feel like a bloody Aussie,” said an elated Dr. Datoo.
He knew he was going to attract attention when he arrived in rural Australia in the 1970s after studying medicine.
He arrived in the western New South Wales town of Harden and stayed there for the next 25 years.

Many in harden’s population of a few thousand were grateful to gave a medical doctor in their town.
As expected, he faced some resistance because of his skin colour.
“I mean they were just saying openly they didn’t want a black person to be their doctor.”
The mainly redneck farmers were bent on driving him out of town.
But, he chose to stand his ground.
Eventually, a New South Wales health minister had to intervene and Dr. Datoo could stay.
A few years later, many of the people who opposed him became his patients.
Dr. Datoo was often called to attend emergencies in the middle of the night and had to drive 70 kilometers to the scene of an accident.

He stabilized his patients before they could be airlifted to a major hospital.
He married a local girl and spent 35 years practicing medicine.
He was the only doctor for many years and was on call 24 hours a day, seven days a week for emergencies.
“When you start delivering the kids of the kids you delivered, then you know you’re getting bloody old.”
Dr. Datoo was part of the initial group of doctors to establish healthcare under one roof at the Cootamundra Medical Centre in 2008.

Speaking about his award, Dr. Datoo said he is really honoured his dream worked out.
“I was looking for a new beginning when I first came to Australia. All the discrimination made me feel unhappy.”
Dr. Datoo is not too happy with the way medicine is practiced now.
A lot of Australian doctors are unwilling to go to remote areas, he pointed out.
“This is a terrible thing.”
He said the honour bestowed on his is a fitting reward for someone who embraced his adopted home so fervently.
He retired in 2011 and now resides in Canberra with his wife Sheryn.
The couple has four children.

Manji Wins Big Ten Athlete of the Week
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Big Ten Conference announced today that Indiana junior Raheel Manji was named Athlete of the Week for men's tennis.
"Raheel has been working hard and preparing well for all of our matches," IU head coach Jeremy Wurtzman said. "It is great for him to receive this honor."
This honor came for Manji after he defeated a Princeton doubles team ranked No. 16 in the country and a singles player from the Tigers, ranked No. 109 in the country.

WINNIPEG — With the recent influx of asylum seekers in Canada, a former Ugandan refugee recalls his journey of survival to Canada in 1972 after being kicked out of his home by a brutal dictator.
In 1971, African Dictator, Idi Amin took control of Uganda in a military coup, and in 1972 he ordered the expulsion of anyone who was of Asian decent. Canada then opened its doors to its first major resettlement of non-European refugees after the dictator gave Ugandan Asians 90 days to leave the country.
Bahadurali Sumar and his family were among the nearly 8,000 Asians who were left with no other option than to leave Uganda. They left the only home they knew with not a penny to their name, and arrived in a country completely foreign to them.

She was enjoying her 12th birthday party when Sheliza started having a severe allergic reaction that landed her in the hospital. She was saddened by how the celebration went wrong, but she learned an important lesson that night. “My parents said that I was even lucky to have a birthday, and there were children around the world who didn’t get to celebrate their birthdays because they live in low-income families,” Sheliza recalls. “I decided I was going to celebrate my birthday in ‘giving style’ from then on.” For the next several birthdays, she got up at 6:00 am and went to the local homeless shelters in Calgary to help serve breakfast. Helping at the shelters opened her eyes to the struggles homeless kids and families face and realized there was little opportunity for these families to meet and socialize. “So my mind was thinking, what could I do to bring these families together?” Sheliza recounts. “And the idea came to me! A birthday party is something that is so significant in a child’s life and often times brings people of diverse backgrounds together.”

The couple pledged to one another that if they became financially able, they would give back to the country that had provided them with a safe refuge. The Nanjis have made good on their promise.

Bush appointed him as the first United States Special Envoy to the OIC, an international organization of 57 countries that provides a collective voice of the Muslim world.
