Ismailli Tafsir

Post by Funklebits »

Ya Ali Madad,

I hope this Ramadan finds you all happy, healthy, & safe.

I am sorry to trouble everyone, but I am currently reading Tafsīr al-ʿAyyāshī: A Fourth/Tenth Century Shīʿī Commentary on the Qurʾan and I was wondering if there was an Ismaili Tafsīr.

I would also be interested in any recommendations on books on how to approach the Holy Quran from an Ismaili perspective.

Thank you in advance for any and help or suggestions.

Ismaili Tafsir is ongoing and tafsirs have been made through out history to reflect the changing historical circumstances. They are expressed in the Farmans of the Imam of the time, Ginans by Ismaili Pirs, Qasidas and philosophical/theological works of great Ismaili Dais in the past.

Thank you very much for taking the time to answer and that makes sense.

From my understanding Farmans, Ginans and other such things are denied to us who are not Ismaili.

I am sorry to ask another question, but with these things beign denied do you have any recommendations on how to approach the Holy Quran from an Ismaili view?

Thank you in advance for any and all help.

Recent Farmans have been published and are available in a series of books called "Farman Mubarak of Mowlana Hazar Imam Shah Karim Al Hussaini Agakhan.

Speeches of Hazar Imam are available online and they cover modern day tafsir on a range of issues such as faith, education, health , finance, architecture etc. You can access them in this website at: https://www.ismaili.net/speeches.html

Then there is an authoritative tafsir by the 48th Imam in the chapter of his Memoirs at: https://www.ismaili.net/Source/0016b.html

Life and Lectures of Al Muayyad fid-din al Shirazi. Ed. by Jawad Muscati and A. M. Moulvi. Karachi: Ismailia Assoc. Pakistan, 1950. 183 pp at: https://www.ismaili.net/Source/1009/content.html

Books by Qadi Nu'man at: https://www.goodreads.com/author/list/6 ... i_Al_Numan

There were many Tafsirs of Quran written in time of Fatimid Caliphat by Ismaili scholars and dais. Unfortunately around 200000+ books on Quranic Tai'limat, Tafsirs, Ta'weel, Quranic related subjets, Philosophy, Medicine, and other sciences were destroyed and burnt by Ayyubids at the end of Musta'li Caliphat in Egypt. Only literature which was produced in Yemen stayed safe. Later on hundreds of books on Quranic ta'limat and Tafsirs, and Ismaili literature were transfered to Da'i al Mutlaq's library in Surat India. According to my knowledge main library in control of Da'i al Mutlaq in Surat have some Quranic Tafsirs written at time of Fatmid Caliphat, but these Tafsirs are not translated in vernacular languages from Arabic.

Again, when Mongols attaked Almout in 1256 they burnt around 100000+ books on various sciences and other Islamic and Ismaili literature.

In modern era there is some Tafsir and mostly Ta'weel of Quran in relation to Ismailism is available in the books written by Allama Naseer Hunzai, for example; A Thousand Wisdom (An Encyclopaedia of Ta'weel), Minaret of Quran, What is Soul, Sanadiq al Jawahir and so on. These books are available in Urdu and English.
