Warmest wishes to you and yours this holiday season!

AKFC's work overseas is underwritten by the support of Canadians like yourself, through your generosity of time, talent, and treasure. Our initiatives empower women, men, girls, and boys to meet their full potential by supporting institutions of health, civil society, and education, like this primary school in Pakistan. This enables them to expand opportunities and pursue brighter futures.

February 2022 newsletter - Starting the conversation to empower a generation

Teresa lives in a remote town in Mozambique, where adolescents rarely talk to their parents about sexual health and have few options for reliable health information. As a youth mentor, Teresa educates her peers about their reproductive and sexual health and rights, including topics like contraception and sexually transmitted infections.
“There are certain conversations that normally don't happen between parents and children, but they happen here in the group.”

March 2022 newsletter - Our continued commitment to Afghanistan

AKFC speaks to the Special Committee on Afghanistan

Since devastating news from Afghanistan dominated headlines last year, the humanitarian situation in the country has rapidly deteriorated. Roughly 3.4 million people are now displaced by conflict inside the country and today, almost 23 million people are facing extreme hunger.

The House of Commons has convened a Special Committee on Afghanistan to examine Canada’s response to the situation in Afghanistan and how Canada can support humanitarian aid. Our CEO, Khalil Z. Shariff, testified at the session on March 21st. “In the face of the current humanitarian emergency,” he said, “our response plan alone aspires to reach some three million Afghans.”

In his statement, he also spoke about how the AKDN, AKFC, and Canada have helped empower women and girls, provide economic opportunity, and strengthen health and education systems through civil society and locally-led programs for over three decades.
“Even as we meet these urgent needs, we must at the same time build for the future and invest in a wide range of local development efforts, especially by supporting community organizations and the institutions that enable them.”

World Partnership Walk's Return

Post by kmaherali »

Dear Karim,

The last two years have upended our lives. But while the pandemic is far from over, we are now beginning to see a “new normal” emerging. We have left some routines behind, while others have stood the test of COVID-19.

One tradition we are thrilled to reignite this year is the World Partnership Walk's return to its historic spring timeframe. I'm delighted to be in touch with you today to officially launch the 2022 World Partnership Walk campaign .

This year, we are inviting you to register https://www.worldpartnershipwalk.com/ge ... /register/ , fundraise, and walk as a team or on your own during the week of June 13. Your walk might look different than our gatherings in years past, but whether you cap off your campaign with a walk around the block or in a park, office, or schoolyard, you will capture the essence of what the World Partnership Walk has always been about : coming together to fight global poverty.

Spring is a season of hope and renewal, but it is impossible to ignore the difficult and sobering circumstances that many are facing around the world.Half of the world's population struggles to meet their basic needs, and more than 700 million people live in extreme poverty. The lasting effects of the pandemic have already reversed decades of progress in areas like gender equality and education, and threaten to push even more people below the poverty line. Conflict, climate change, and humanitarian crises add to the challenges we face as a global community.

By joining the Walk , you are raising critical funds to fight poverty in Africa and Asia. But you are doing more than that. As you reach out to your networks to support your campaign, and when you walk the week of June 13, you are making public your commitment to a more peaceful, prosperous, and equal future for all. You are showing people around the world that you are there for them.

Join us today, walk the week of June 13, and help us spark hope for millions around the world.

Register Today https://www.worldpartnershipwalk.com/ge ... /register/

I wish you and your loved ones continued health and well-being, and look forward to joining you for the World Partnership Walk this spring.

With best wishes,

Khalil Z. Shariff

Celebrate the global impact of volunteers

Post by kmaherali »

Dear Karim,

This National Volunteer Week, we are celebrating the impact of volunteers all over the world. Volunteers play a critical role in our work to fight poverty, both in Canada and overseas.

Today we are sharing the inspiring story of Gul Mahoor, a volunteer whose actions help save the lives of women and babies in Pakistan. In Nasirabad village, she voluntarily manages a community health relief fund that provides people in her community access to micro-loans.

In Nasirabad, there are no proper health services for pregnant women and their children. In emergency cases, families often do not have the funds needed to take the costly taxi trips to different towns for treatment. Thanks to Gul's dedication of time and efforts, her community can rely on the fund to seek urgent care. So far, Gul Mahoor has been able to help over 90 community members!

Funds raised by the Walk helped to establish the fund that Gul manages. By stepping forward together, we can empower many more changemakers like Gul, who dedicate themselves to helping their communities. Sign-up today!

How you can help girls stay in school

Post by kmaherali »

Image

Dear Karim,

Education unlocks a lifetime of opportunity. But for many adolescent girls and young women – particularly refugees and internally displaced persons – the key is often out of reach. That's exactly why AKFC is working to ensure girls and young women in crisis-affected areas can stay in school.

Thanks to the funds raised by the Walk, AKFC is supporting a four-year project in partnership with World University Service of Canada and the Government of Canada, to empower over 148,000 adolescent girls and young women pursuing an education in crisis-affected areas of South Sudan, Syria, and Uganda.

So far, girls have benefitted from mentorship, peer groups, and COVID-19 response kits that ensured they continued to learn when schools were closed. But programs like these rely on people like you. Join the walk today and fundraise to become part of the journey.

Register Today https://www.worldpartnershipwalk.com/ge ... /register/

Let's show the world we are there for them when they need us most.

Sincerely,

The World Partnership Walk Team

Announcing the 2022 International Youth Fellows

Image

We are proud to announce the 2022 International Youth Fellows! Since 1989, more than 500 young Canadians have participated in AKFC’s International Youth Fellowship, a program that has helped launch diverse careers in government, non-profit, media, finance, and beyond.

After attending a management seminar, the Fellows departed for their eight-month overseas placements in Africa and Asia. Before they left, we interviewed four Fellows to learn more about their international development journey thus far.

“I think that the field of international development gives perspective into different ways of life and allows for more empathy because our own biases and stories are challenged… I applied to the Fellowship to challenge myself and my worldview.”
- Jenna Mulji, Clinical Support Fellow

Supporting the health and wellbeing of adolescent girls

The world’s 600 million adolescent girls have proved time and time again that with the right skills and opportunities, they can be changemakers in their communities.

October 11 marked the tenth anniversary of the International Day of the Girl, a day dedicated to recognizing girls’ rights and the unique challenges they face. To commemorate this day, we highlighted a few of the ways we partner with Canada to support girls in Afghanistan, India, the Kyrgyz Republic, Pakistan, and Tajikistan.
