Global Jamat presents gift to Mawlana Hazar Imam on his 85th birthday

Image

In commemoration of the milestone occasion of our beloved Mawlana Hazar Imam’s 85th Salgirah Mubarak, a humble gift was presented on behalf of the global Jamat as a token of our gratitude, love, and devotion.

The gift comprises a pair of porcelain vases made in the nineteenth century in Paris, decorated with elaborate Islamic Persian motifs of gilt scrollwork, arabesques, and stylised flowers in heightened relief against a pale lavender background.

Striking yet elegant, the vases were made in 1874 at the Sèvres factory, the preeminent porcelain manufacturer in Europe in the 18th and 19th centuries. Designed by the renowned Parisian sculptor Albert Ernest Carrier-Belleuse, the slender-shaped vases, each of which is 55 cm in height, are in extremely fine condition.

The lavender colour of the vases is extremely unusual – changing according to the light under which it is placed, from purple/grey in daylight to pale pink in artificial light. While similar vases in blue and white can be found in private and museum collections, vases in this pale lavender colour are exceptionally rare.

In accepting the gift submitted in person by Jamati leaders on behalf of the global Jamat, Mawlana Hazar Imam expressed his immense happiness and appreciation. Hazar Imam asked the leaders to inform the Jamat that he is very happy and will cherish the gift as a memento of this very special occasion.

At this time, Mawlana Hazar Imam most graciously conveyed to the global Jamat his best blessings for the Jamat’s security, safety, good health, and mushkil-asan.

Today, Salgirah is being commemorated in every country where the Jamat lives. Regional and local celebrations are taking place online and in person where permitted, alongside a diverse variety of specially commissioned shows airing on The Ismail TV for the global Jamat to enjoy.

The Jamati institutions wish Salgirah Mubarak to the Jamat, and Mubarak for Mawlana Hazar Imam’s acceptance of our humble submission.

Aga Khan Development Network Kenya

What you need to know:

- The Aga Khan Development Network has a substantial presence in Kenya; 11 Agencies employ more than 15,000 people, 99 per cent Kenyan.
In recent years, His Highness has established a number of Ismaili Centres globally – symbolic markers of the permanent presence and values of Ismaili communities around the world.
- The 65th anniversary of His Highness the Aga Khan’s Imamat and the centenary of Town Jamatkhana are emblems of heritage and of a legacy of over a hundred years.

While much of modern public discourse around migrant communities focuses on current global circumstances, and the latter part of the 20th century, it is worth reflecting on legacies that have endured over decades, indeed centuries, and learn from their longevity, contribution and impact.

Today, we celebrate the 65th anniversary – Imamat Day – of the installation of His Highness the Aga Khan as the 49th Imam (spiritual leader) of the Shia Ismaili Muslims.

This year, the Ismailis and the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN) in Kenya are also celebrating the centenary of Town Jamatkhana (colloquially known as Khoja Mosque) in Nairobi.

Quality of life

In Islam, the spiritual and material quality of life is inextricably connected.

His Highness sees the improvement of material quality of life as intrinsic to the Imam’s mandate.

He founded the AKDN to deliver on this and is its Chairman.

Under his guidance, leadership and vision, AKDN has grown into a global network with a presence in 33 countries, with investments in multiple sectors including health, education, social development, economic development, financial services, infrastructure, industry, media, tourism, culture and the environment.

The vision of the Imam for Kenya goes back to the first days of his Imamat and to the country’s independence.

The Imam’s endeavours are dedicated to improving the quality of life of all Kenyans, and the opportunities available to them, particularly the most vulnerable – regardless of faith, gender, race or tribe.

AKDN has a substantial presence in Kenya; 11 Agencies employ more than 15,000 people, 99 per cent Kenyan.

Over 175 programmes and initiatives contribute some Sh115 billion annually to Kenya’s economy.

This established presence is constantly evolving to address current issues.

For example a substantial financial and material contribution to Kenya’s Covid-19 pandemic response; environment and climate change endeavours operating under an international directive towards a 2030 net-zero goal; Nation Media Group’s evolving strategies in the context of the digital era; Aga Khan University Hospital, Nairobi, at the forefront of cutting-edge science and technology (for example, the PET scanner and cyclotron for diagnosis of cancer, heart and brain conditions); Jubilee Insurance and Diamond Trust Bank leading in the transformation of digital financial services; Industrial Promotion Services’ leadership in industry and infrastructure; and Aga Khan Foundation’s programmes working in partnership with hundreds of civil society organisations.

Bridges of friendship

In recent years, His Highness has established a number of Ismaili Centres globally – symbolic markers of the permanent presence and values of Ismaili communities around the world.

Incorporating spaces for social and cultural gatherings, intellectual engagement and reflection, as well as spiritual contemplation, they are bridges of friendship and understanding to enhance relationships among faith communities, government and civil society.

While Town Jamatkhana is not a designated Ismaili Centre, it has functioned as such.

A number of diverse public events have been hosted at Town Jamatkhana in the past few years, including the Rays of Light Exhibition, which outlined the history, lineage and work of the Ismaili Imams and the Imamat; Fragile Beauty, Prince Hussain Aga Khan’s exhibition of marine photography to raise awareness around protection of marine ecosystems; the inaugural roundtable of the AKDN Environment and Climate Committee, chaired by Prince Rahim Aga Khan; most recently, an AKDN-UN roundtable to discuss various existing and new collaborations between our respective agencies; and panel discussions around the environment and the future role of media in a digital era.

The venue has been an ideal backdrop to host significant stakeholders from government, the diplomatic corps, civil society, and academia.

More than 5,000 guests and visitors, including Mr Keriako Tobiko, Cabinet Secretary for Environment, and Dr Stephen Jackson, the UN Resident Coordinator to Kenya, have recently experienced and remarked on the grandeur and historical legacy that this national gazetted monument represents.

The history of Ismailis in Kenya is mostly documented and recorded through oral tradition.

The anecdotal memories shared by descendants of the early pioneers sketch a portrait of the role and impact of the Ismaili community in Kenya over the last 150 years.

Sultan Somjee, an Ismaili ethnographer, writes that early settlers built prayer and social halls that helped anchor them in the new land they had arrived in.

The first stone Jamatkhana built in Kuze, Old Town Mombasa, was opened in 1888 and his great grandfather was its custodian in 1898.

Like the Ismaili Centres today, the historic Jamatkhanas were places for the community to worship, socialise and cultivate social and cultural bonds.

The family of the notable pioneer, Suleman Verjee, who were donors to the Kuze and Town Jamatkhanas, described the events that led to the construction of Town Jamatkhana in 1920.

The new building replaced a more rudimentary Jamatkhana nearby that had been in use since the inception of Nairobi.

This transition was the special desire of the 48th Imam, His Highness Aga Khan III, and it signified the permanence and aspirations of the Ismaili community in East Africa.

Guided by His Highness Aga Khan III, Ismailis made substantial investments in health and education, as well as donated to social development initiatives.

Allidina Visram, renowned for his trade caravans that extended from the East African coast to the interior, built the first Jamatkhana in Kisumu in 1905, and the Allidina Visram High School in Mombasa (fondly remembered by generations of Kenyans), in 1923.

Social Service League

Suleman Verjee, Allidina Visram and Rahimtulla Walji Hirji, formed the first Social Service League around 1917.

This and other initiatives, such as the establishment of the first Aga Khan Sports Club in 1931 and the development of housing cooperative societies, stabilised the community socially and economically.

The 65th anniversary of His Highness the Aga Khan’s Imamat and the centenary of Town Jamatkhana are emblems of heritage and of a legacy of over a hundred years.

Much of this has been achieved through partnerships with the government, international organisations and others. These partnerships continue to strengthen, and we are grateful for the support provided through them.

Statement by the Prime Minister on Imamat Day

July 11, 2022
Ottawa, Ontario
The Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, today issued the following statement on Imamat Day:

“Today, we join Ismaili Muslims in Canada and around the world to celebrate Imamat Day. This day marks the milestone 65th anniversary of the accession of His Highness Prince Karim Aga Khan IV as the 49th hereditary Imam – spiritual leader – of Shia Ismaili Muslims.

“Since inheriting the Office of the Ismaili Imamat, the Aga Khan has worked to improve the lives of all people, regardless of their birthplace, background, or religious beliefs. Through the work of the Aga Khan Development Network, His Highness has championed access to health care and education, promoted financial inclusion, and helped develop infrastructure in underserved regions.

“The Aga Khan promotes the values of compassion, openness, and respect for diversity and human rights – values that Canadians hold dear. In recognition of these shared values and his contributions to Canada and the world, His Highness was granted honorary Canadian Citizenship in 2010. The establishment of the Global Centre for Pluralism in Ottawa is a demonstration of our shared commitment to building a more pluralistic world. Canada is also home to the Aga Khan Museum in Toronto – the first museum solely dedicated to Islamic arts and cultures in North America.

“Today we also recognize that this year marks the 50th anniversary of the Ugandan Asian resettlement. In 1972, Canada welcomed thousands of refugees from Uganda, many of whom were Ismaili Muslims, and the Aga Khan played a central role in securing their arrival. In the decades since, the Ismaili communities in Canada have grown, thrived, and contributed to making Canada a stronger, more prosperous, and more diverse country in many significant ways.

“On behalf of our family, Sophie and I extend our most sincere wishes to His Highness Prince Karim Aga Khan and thank him for his persistent efforts to make our world a better place.

“Khushiali Mubarak!”

Message Blessing & guidance from Hazar Imam

Post by mahebubchatur »

8th July 2022

The President and Members, His Highness Prince Aga Khan Shia Imami Ismaili Council for Canada, Toronto

My dear President and Members,

On the occasion of Imamat day, the 11th of July 2022, I send my warmest and my most affectionate paternal maternal loving blessings to all my beloved spiritual children of my Canada Jamat.

I give my best loving blessings for the souls of all my ruhani spiritual children, and I pray that their souls may rest in eternal peace.

I am mindful that my Jamats in certain parts of the world are experiencing difficulties because of one or a combination of economic, political, climatic, security or other adverse factors.

In the context of the economic volatility being experienced in different parts of the world, as in the past, my guidance to my Jamat is to live prudently, and to come together within your families and within the Jamat in facing this situation. My Jamat’s increasing connectivity across frontiers is a matter of great satisfaction for me, and it is my wish that my murids, who have the ability and capacity, should work with the Jamati institutions to come together, and extend support to Jamats across countries and traditions.

It is my conviction that my Jamat will overcome all difficulties with the same resolve and resilience it has shown historically in facing adversity, and will remain firm in practicing the Faith, living by its ethics, maintaining unity, and using the intellect to find peaceful solutions for crises. I convey to all my murids who are facing difficulties my best loving blessings for Mushkil-Asan.

I am deeply touched by the gift of a 17th century Alam submitted on behalf of the Jamat on the occasion of my 65th Imamat Day. This magnificent work of art symbolises the foundational principles of the Shia Ismaili Muslim Tariqah.

On this happy occasion, I send my most affectionate loving blessings to all the beloved spiritual children who have submitted services and sent warm messages of congratulations and good wishes.

I send my affectionate loving blessings for your spiritual well being, worldly success, good health, happiness, progress, strength of faith and unity, with my special loving blessings for Mushkil-Asan, and for the safety and security of all my Jamats.

You are all most particularly in my heart, in my thoughts and in my prayers - Remember that your Imam is always with you.

Yours affectionately,
Aga Khan

ANNOUNCEMENT BY THE ISMAILI LEADERS’ INTERNATIONAL FORUM (LIF) - Announced on 15 July 2022

On the occasion of Imamat Day, the 11th of July 2022, our beloved Mawlana Hazar Imam most graciously granted a mulaqat to a delegation of senior Jamati leaders in Lisbon, Portugal.

Prince Amyn, Princess Zahra, Prince Rahim, Prince Hussain and Prince Aly Muhammad attended this event.
The Jamati leaders conveyed respectful “Imamat Day Mubarak” to Mawlana Hazar Imam on behalf of the global Jamat from the mountains and valleys, from rural as well as urban concentrations, who were celebrating their beloved Mawla’s 65th Imamat Day with utmost joy and happiness.

The leaders submitted the global Jamat’s shukhrana for Hazar Imam’s abundant blessings, love, and protection, and his guidance in the spiritual and worldly spheres of life, that illuminates the sirat-al mustaqim and keeps the Jamat united across frontiers.

The leaders reaffirmed the global Jamat’s baiyah and the Jamat’s unconditional love for and loyalty to the Imam-e-Zaman, Mawlana Shah Karim Al-Husseini.
They also expressed appreciation and gratitude to Hazar Imam’s family for their work and support to the Imam.
The leaders sought Mawlana Hazar Imam’s forgiveness for all shortcomings and errors.

In his infinite mercy, Mawlana Hazar Imam was pleased to respond by accepting all the submissions made on behalf of the global Jamat, and conveyed the blessing of Khanavadan. He asked that the Jamat be told how deeply he appreciates their submission of love and commitment, and how much he appreciates the services of murids who are serving the Jamat. In conveying his admiration and gratitude, Hazar Imam added that he saw their work as a permanent commitment to improving the Jamat’s quality of life. Hazar Imam went on to express the hope that the coming years will be warm and friendly for the Jamat.
During the mulaqat, the Jamati leaders displayed the humble Imamat Day gift of a historic 17th century alam that had been submitted at an earlier juncture, and which was acknowledged in Hazar Imam’s Imamat Day Talika Mubarak. In graciously reiterating his acceptance of this gift, Hazar Imam described it as “marvellous”, and indicated that it will be placed in the Diwan of the Ismaili Imamat in Lisbon.

Mawlana Hazar Imam was pleased to accept Mehmani submitted on behalf of the global Jamat, and blessed Ab-e Safa. These will be shared in due course with respective Jamats worldwide.

At the conclusion of the mulaqat, in conveying the blessing of Khanavadan for the global Jamat, Mawlana Hazar Imam desired that the Jamat be informed that the Imam is well and does not want his Jamat to worry. The Jamat should also be informed that, although age is slowing Hazar Imam down, all Imamat work and planning for the future continue with the support of the Imam’s family and Jamati leaders, under Hazar Imam’s authority.

The LIF, National Council, all Jamati institutions, Mukhi-Kamadias and Mukhiani-Kamadianis convey warm Mubarak to the Jamat for Mawlana Hazar Imam’s blessings and pleasure conveyed during this Imamat Day mulaqat.

THE government has reaffirmed its commitment to continue working closely with the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN) in all areas of mutual interest.

The Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation, Ambassador Mbarouk Nassor Mbarouk expressed the commitment this week when the organisation celebrated the 65th anniversary of the ascension of Aga Khan to the Ismaili Imamat in Dar es Salaam.

Ambassador Mbarouk commended the AKDN for organising the Imamat Day celebration and for its long standing and mutually beneficial partnership with Tanzania, stretching back over 100 years.

"We have indeed seen the partnership growing from strength to strength, spanning a wide range of fields including education, healthcare, culture, infrastructure development and tourism," he said.

"The Aga Khan Development Network has been a true development partner and has helped in job creation, poverty alleviation and economic development."

On his part, AKDN Resident Diplomatic Representative to Tanzania, Mr Amin Kurji, hailed the strong partnership between AKDN and Tanzania that has existed for over a century.

"AKDN's work in Tanzania in collaboration with its development partners has touched millions of lives in various sectors, including poverty reduction, education, health, economic development, and cultural restoration," Mr Kurji said.

"Our work here in Tanzania wouldn't neither be possible nor effective without the support of the government. It has created an enabling environment, helping to improving the quality of life for the people."

Mr Kurji congratulated President Samia and her government for substantial economic strides and social development that have been achieved in such a short period of time since she came to office in March 2021.

The Minister for Information, Communication and Informational Technology, Nape Nnauye was among notable dignitaries that attended the ceremony, which included members of diplomatic corps, representatives of civil society organisations and business, and members of the Ismaili community.

Earlier today, Prince Amyn, Prince Hussain, and Princess Fareen attended an Imamat Day reception at the Diwan of the Ismaili Imamat, along with senior leaders of the Portuguese government, members of the diplomatic community, civil society, and Jamati and AKDN leaders.

Prince Amyn extended a warm welcome to guests at the event, which was held to commemorate Mawlana Hazar Imam’s 67th Imamat Day. He spoke of the Imamat’s partnership with Portugal to improve the lives of people.

“It is my hope that this building and your presence with us today will be seen as strong signals of hope,” said Prince Amyn.

“Our work in this country and our partnership with Portugal and its people provide us with the creations, discoveries and the actions not only to be of benefit to the people of this country but to work fruitfully and successfully in some of the most difficult regions of the world.”

Nazim Ahmad, Diplomatic Representative of the Ismaili Imamat to Portugal, expressed his appreciation to Portuguese leaders, past and present, for supporting the Imamat’s work over many years.

“We reaffirm our strong commitment to continue together,” he said, “in the same spirit and with the same determination, on the path that we have been pursuing for a long time.”

Guests were treated to a special performance by the Aga Khan Master Musicians, renowned performers and composer-arrangers, in collaboration with the Amara Quartet, an all-female ensemble known for their contemporary renditions of the Portuguese traditional Fado.

In attendance were some of the country’s most senior leaders, including former presidents, prime ministers, foreign ministers, and mayors, many of whom have worked with the Imamat, the Jamat, and AKDN over several decades.

Her Excellency the Minister of Internal Affairs, Dr Margarida Blasco offered her congratulations to the Imam and the Jamat “for the excellent work that has been done here in Portugal, as in dozens of other countries, in favour of peace and social, economic and cultural development.”

“Portugal is proud to welcome you,” she added, “and to collaborate with you through the Aga Khan Development Network to create better living conditions for all.”

Gift presented to Mawlana Hazar Imam for his 67th Imamat Day

Post by kmaherali »

On the auspicious occasion of Imamat Day, our beloved Imam was humbly presented with a special gift on behalf of the Global Ismaili Jamat.

The gift is a Monumental Basin, which dates back to Safavid Persia or Mughal India in the 18th century, engraved with depictions of animals, palmettes, and arabesques.

The rim of the basin features calligraphic odes from a qasida by the 11th century Ismaili da‘i, philosopher, traveller and among the greatest of the Persian poets, Nasir Khusraw.

Verses of the qasida can be translated as follows:

None save a sage sees the fruit
Of this world’s tree, O sage!
A sage deems the wise this world’s fruit
The fool, its thorn
Hidden are the noble
Like dates among countless tangled thorns…
In God’s care am I in Yumgan
Look well, I am no prisoner!
No one says silver, gems, and rubies
Are abject captives in their mines
While poor Yumgan may be powerless
Here have I plentiful power and prestige…
People deem not a royal pearl inadequate, inferior
Simply for its magnificent oyster…
For those of luminous hearts and wakeful eyes
Knowledge and wisdom surpass gems and minted gold
