The Best Response to the Coronavirus? Altruism, Not Panic

The impulse to secure your safety is understandable but counterproductive.

Are you fearful about catching the coronavirus? Are you anxious about whether you’re properly prepared for its arrival? You’re in good company.

In the past few days, I’ve had more than a few patients call or email to ask me to double or even triple the dosage of their prescription antidepressant or anti-anxiety medication so that they could have a bigger supply on hand “just in case.”

Throughout the country, people are stockpiling food in anticipation of a shortage or a quarantine. Supplies of Purell hand sanitizer flew off the shelves in local pharmacies and are now hard to find or even unavailable online.

I understand the impulse to secure one’s safety in the face of a threat. But the fact is that if I increase the supply of medication for my patients, I could well deprive other patients of needed medication, so I reluctantly declined those requests.

As a psychiatrist, I frequently tell my patients that their anxieties and fears are out of proportion to reality, something that is often true and comforting for them to realize. But when the object of fear is a looming pandemic, all bets are off.

In this case, there is reason for alarm. The coronavirus is an uncertain and unpredictable danger. This really grabs our attention, because we have been hard-wired by evolution to respond aggressively to new threats. After all, it’s safer to overact to the unknown than to do too little.

Unfortunately, that means we tend to overestimate the risk of novel dangers. I can cite you statistics until I am blue in the face demonstrating that your risk of dying from the coronavirus is minuscule compared with your risk of dying from everyday threats, but I doubt you’ll be reassured. For example, 169,000 Americans died by accident and 648,000 died of heart disease in 2017, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. As of Sunday morning 19 Americans had died from the coronavirus.

The reason this probably doesn’t make you feel better is simple: Just as we tend to assume the worst about novel threats — the safest, if not the most statistically justifiable, strategy — we tend to underestimate the danger of familiar risks because we are habituated to them. We are not very rational when it comes to assessing risk.

The good news is that even in the face of fear, we do have the capacity to act in ways that would help limit contagion during an epidemic. Specifically, we can behave altruistically, which benefits everyone.

AKHB: Oral health

On March 20, World Oral Health Day will be celebrated.

Oral health, while extremely important, is an area of health that is often overlooked. From childhood, with primary dentition, to adult dentition, oral hygiene is directly related to quality of life and well-being.

In 2017, according to the World Health Organization, around 3.5 billion people worldwide suffered from diseases of the oral cavity, which include pathologies such as cavities and gum disease, even oral cancer and birth defects . Of all these, the most common are cavities. The formation of cavities happens gradually. Initially asymptomatic, they can, over time, cause pain and discomfort. In this article, we will talk about how they develop, what the risk factors are and what we can do to prevent them.

How do cavities develop?

There are several factors necessary for tooth decay to appear. The first, and most obvious, are the teeth. Each adult has 32 teeth. Apart from wisdom teeth, permanent dentition is complete by the age of 13. As such, from an early age we need care to preserve it.

Each tooth is composed of three layers: the enamel (outer layer), the dentin (loved from the middle and the largest of the three) and the dental pulp (innermost layer).

Enamel is mineralized, that is, it contains certain minerals (such as calcium) that maintain the hardness of the teeth and protect the two inner layers. Enamel is the first part of the tooth that is affected by cavities.

Another factor that will affect the health of the oral cavity is saliva. Saliva lubricates the teeth, dilutes the sugars in food and drink, has antimicrobial properties, allows enamel remineralization and helps in the repair of injured tissues, that is, saliva is a protective factor against cavities.

Eating habits also have a direct influence on the development of cavities. Acidic foods (eg soft drinks) weaken the mineral structure of the enamel. Sugar also has a direct influence on this process.

The oral cavity contains several bacteria. These are usually present in small amounts and form plaque around the teeth. When we consume sugar, bacteria digest it and release an acidic substance. This substance, like the acidic foods mentioned above, weakens your teeth. To avoid this pathological process, we must maintain adequate oral hygiene habits.

How can we prevent the appearance of cavities?

There are simple recommendations that we can follow that can help us avoid the pain and discomfort that cavities cause:

- Reduce sugar consumption. In addition to helping prevent overweight and diabetes, eating less sugar a day means that the bacteria do not have enough food to cause injury.
- Do not smoke. The use of tobacco also promotes the development of cavities and should be avoided.
- Brush your teeth at least twice a day. Brushing your teeth removes plaque, preventing it from accumulating and wreaking havoc, and removes the remains of food that remain in the oral cavity after eating. Brushing should be done at least twice a day for two minutes. The toothbrush used must be soft and must be replaced after two to three months. We should not use too much force when brushing and we must clean all surfaces, including the gums. The movement we use must be top to bottom or circular (avoid brushing backwards).
- Flossing and oral antiseptics regularly. Floss should be used to clean surfaces between teeth. The use of mouthwashes can also be beneficial.
Regular consultations with your dentist / stomatologist. Regular consultation in consultation allows problems to be detected in the early stages, allowing them to be resolved quickly and painlessly.

Changes in Programming

After careful consultation with public health officials, a series of proactive and targeted measures have been introduced to reduce risk to the Jamat. These decisions have been taken to minimize the risk of transmission in the future, and not to create alarm within the Jamat.

- Navroz Celebrations: Social events to celebrate Navroz, including dandia/raas and meals, have been cancelled across the country. This pre-emptive decision has been taken to minimize risks to the Jamat from social, large-scale gatherings at a time when community transmission, including from rental facilities and services, is anticipated.
- Tea and Cookies: The serving of tea and cookies after evening Jamatkhana ceremonies has been suspended.
- Dilsoji, Bayah and Weddings: When offering condolences or good wishes related to funerals, births and weddings in the Jamatkhana or extended spaces, Jamati members are asked to place their hand over their heart, instead of shaking hands or other close contact.
- Bait-ul Ilm: Core Jamati programming, such as Bait-ul Ilm, will continue at this time.
- Jamati Programs: Changes to other Jamati programs involving large groups of people are being implemented, based on the region and associated circumstances. Where a Jamati program is affected, this will be communicated through the Al-Akhbar, iiCanada App, the.ismaili social media Facebook and Instagram feeds, and Jamatkhana announcements.
- Infection Control Measures: Additional infection prevention measures have been put in place in the Jamatkhana space to reduce risk. These will also be communicated through Jamatkhana announcements.

As the circumstances in other countries with a Jamati presence are different than in Canada, the Jamati Institutions in each jurisdiction may implement different measures to protect the Jamat.

WHAT MEASURES TO TAKE IN THE ISMAILI AND JAMATKHANAS CENTER?

We ask Jamat's attention to the following measures:

- Before entering the Prayer Hall, a volunteer will be at the door to place the disinfectant gel in your hands.

- Social greetings that involve physical contact should be avoided.

- At the end of the religious ceremonies, Jamat should avoid staying in the Prayer Hall and socializing, heading straight home.

- When you leave, you must also disinfect your hands.

If any member of Jamat has suspicious symptoms - cough, fever and difficulty breathing - they should be isolated in order not to spread the disease and contact the National Health Service on the SNS 24 - 808242424 line. We also request that you please inform us if any member of Jamat receives a positive diagnosis of coronavirus.

The decrease in the transmission of the virus depends on compliance with the measures enacted by health authorities. Following these measures is critical to reducing Covid-19 exposure and infection. We must have a responsible attitude in our day-to-day lives, so that we can be protected and protect everyone around us.

"Countries can still change the course of this pandemic if they detect, test, treat, isolate, track and mobilize people in the response," said Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, at WHO headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland.

12 Simple Habits to Naturally Boost Your Immune System

Have a giggle

Laughter is one trick for how to boost your immune system, along with your mood. It raises levels of antibodies in the blood and those of the white blood cells that attack and kill bacteria and viruses. It also increases the number of antibodies in the mucus made in the nose and respiratory passages, the entry points for many germs. (This is what your mucus can reveal about your health.)

Hi Karim,

There are two questions that have fascinated immunologists in any pandemic. Why do some people get sick while others stay healthy? And among those who become infected, why do some people fare so much better than others of the same age and gender? Over and over again, it turns out that a person’s diet and lifestyle make an enormous difference.

The truth is that there are things you can do — right now — to optimize your immune system. And in the time of COVID-19, these strategies are more important than ever.

That’s why our team created the free Smart Immunity Handbook for you. In it, you’ll discover the top foods that can help you stay healthy — and also help you to swiftly recover if you do become sick.

Which of these foods are you already eating? And which ones could you enjoy more of?

Hi Karim,

According to the American Heart Association, people with coronary heart disease or hypertension are more likely to be infected with COVID-19 and develop more severe symptoms.

Heart disease was already the world’s #1 killer, and in the time of COVID-19, it’s become even more significant.

But the good news is, there’s a lot you can do to clean up your arteries and get your heart in top shape. In fact, for most people, cardiovascular disease is a preventable (and even reversible) condition. And the same steps that can help you prevent heart disease can also help you optimize your vitality and health — in every organ and cell of your body.

Want to know more? Then you might want to hear what Food Revolution Summit speaker Michael Greger, MD, has to say about how not to die from heart disease.

Get the whole story here.
https://foodrevolution.org/blog/how-not ... ant-1-of-2

Yours for a healthy heart,

Ocean Robbins

P.S. Research has shown that heart disease can be prevented and even reversed — just by eating the right foods. In the 2020 Food Revolution Summit, you’ll get the latest insights from Dr. Greger and 24 other trusted authorities on what you need to know NOW about food and health — all interviewed by my dad and colleague, John Robbins.

Let’s Get Real About Coronavirus Tests

There aren’t enough. Many are shoddy. Most aren’t even designed to tell us what we really want to know.

In the world’s ongoing quest to respond to the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus, one of the tools most often invoked and hailed is testing — testing for current infections, to determine who is ill and contagious, and testing for antibodies, a sign of past infection and possibly, too, of future immunity.

The goal is to identify people who might spread the virus and isolate them, and to allow anyone protected from reinfection to resume an active social and professional life.

Democrats in the United States Senate have proposed a plan for “fast, free testing in every community.” At a recent news briefing, Andrew M. Cuomo, the governor of New York State, declared: “The more testing, the more open the economy.” President Trump’s new business advisory council has warned that the American economy will not rebound until wide-scale screening takes place.

But there are major problems with this approach. Far too few tests are available in the United States. Some are shoddy. Even the ones that are precise aren’t designed to produce the kind of definitive yes-no results that people expect.

Exactly How Dangerous Is It to Take a Walk Outside During COVID-19?

Canadian germ expert Jason Tetro on how to stay safe from coronavirus when taking a walk or going for a run.

Ask An Expert: How Can I Stay Safe Outside During COVID-19?

Reader’s Digest Canada: We know the virus is airborne to some extent, but how easily can infection spread that way? Is it okay to take a walk around my neighbourhood? Or even just sit on my porch?

Germ expert Jason Tetro: This virus spreads primarily through droplets, which are relatively large amounts of fluid that are expelled from your mouth when you cough or sneeze. But also, when you’re coughing, sneezing or breathing hard like when you’re working out, you expel aerosolized droplets, which are smaller.

The majority of the risk is being infected from the larger droplets, which occur within just over half a metre of an infected person. From that distance to two metres there is still some risk but not as much. Beyond two metres, the risk goes down significantly because everything but the smaller aerosolized droplets will have fallen. Those smaller droplets are not as much of an issue because the amount of virus in them is so low that you would have to be constantly exposed to them to be infected.

So as long as you’re appropriately distancing from other people, it’s safe to take a walk or sit in front of your house.

So exactly how much of the virus do I have to be exposed to in order to get sick?

What you’re talking about is called the minimal infective dose. While we don’t know exactly what it is for this virus, for other respiratory viruses it’s usually around 1,000 virions—the term for each individual particle of virus—accumulated over one or several exposures. If you happen to be immunocompromised, that number goes down significantly.

Most of the time, the aerosols that are let off when you exercise would have about a dozen virions in them, or fewer.

So if I live in a building, I don’t need to be worried about it traveling through vents then, right?

The only time that would be a concern is if there’s a person who is on some kind of mechanical ventilator and it’s continually letting off aerosols into the HVAC system of the building. The odds of that happening in a residential building are very low, and even if it was happening, there’s also a very low chance the aerosols generated would lead to an infection of a person in another apartment.

We’ve covered walks, but what if I’m going for a jog and I hear a runner in front of me cough?

Run in the other direction. When people exercise, they’re increasing their breath, and expelling more volume. When you exercise, you produce more mucus—so even just breathing will produce more droplets. If you cough, the amount is going to be really high.

Also, if you’re running, the increased distance you’re covering means you should be a good five metres away from another jogger in order to be absolutely sure you don’t run into their cough.

Even if you’re walking, or just standing on the sidewalk, if a person walking by looks like they’re coughing, the best thing to do is turn your face away and walk in the other direction.

I’ve sometimes held my breath when passing people. Does that help?

Yes, that’s a good idea. If you close your mouth and you’re not breathing, nothing’s getting in there. If the virus gets on you, it would get trapped inside your sweat droplets or get caught up in the hairs inside your nose, which will prevent it from infecting you. Of course, the best thing is to have some kind of barrier—a scarf, a neck tube or a face mask.

This article is about doctor fighting for his life and surviving. He is explaining in the video what he went through fighting for his life.

A Young Doctor, Fighting for His Life

“I just went down on my knees,” his mother recalled later. “I just implored God for mercy.”

Dr. Andres Maldonado normally bounded into the Emergency Department, fit and vigorous, but this time he had to be escorted in, pale and fighting for breath, with a patient bracelet on his right wrist. A nurse, seeing her colleague struggle, burst into tears.

Maldonado was 27, a third-year resident physician with no underlying medical conditions. When he came down with a fever on March 23, he called in sick. Soon he developed a tightness in his chest and tested positive for the coronavirus.

At first he resisted the idea of seeking treatment. He was by nature stoical; in youth soccer games, other boys had crumpled when injured, but Maldonado always got up and limped through his pain. Now as a doctor — a badass emergency doctor, he jokingly called himself — he was humiliated by the thought of becoming a patient.

But on March 31, so out of breath he could barely get to the bathroom, he called his older brother, Nestor, also an emergency physician, who remembers panic in Andres’s voice.

Can Walking Barefoot Heal Your Heart?

Why do so many people equate relaxation and pleasure with walking barefoot along the beach as the waves roll in? How come my son River’s first instinct is to take his shoes off when he sees a field of green grass?

Is it kooky human behavior that is simply hard-wired into our genetic makeup, or is there something more to this urge to remove footwear?

The Unshod, or Shoe-Less, Revolution

Historically speaking, it seems like we’re right in step with our forebearers. Long before we had cushiony sneakers, our distant ancestors tended to walk barefoot over rock, rubble, dirt, stick, and stream. Their feet were strong and nimble, able to sense and react to any surface they encountered. More recent native cultures often walk through nature on their naked soles, instead of wearing moccasins or similar footwear.

Commonalities like “barefootedness”, that we see repeated among ancient groups, beg for further investigation as to “why?” Especially in cultures where simple foot gear was already an option.

Thankfully, there is good science behind shoelessness and the findings are fascinating.

Current Research on Grounding

It turns out that the sensation we feel when our feet make contact with moist sand is more than just a feeling. This therapeutic touch of mother earth is laden with remarkable health benefits,

- reducing inflammation,
- boosting antioxidants in our body,
- improving sleep,
- and, promoting healthy blood flow.

The primordial practice of walking barefoot, sometimes referred to as “grounding,” is only just beginning to be studied by modern science. One of the most groundbreaking findings is the powerful heart health effect of direct skin contact with the earth.

A study published by the Journal of Alternative And Complementary Medicine from 2013 states that walking barefoot “reduces blood viscosity, which is a major factor in cardiovascular disease”.

Blood viscosity is a term used to describe the “thickness and stickiness of your blood.” The lower the viscosity, the easier your blood flows through your blood vessels and circulates throughout your body. The higher your blood’s viscosity, or thickness, the slower it moves.

To test the effects of grounding on blood viscosity, subjects had their red blood cells (RBCs) examined under a microscope to determine the number of clumped groups of RBCs in each sample. High instances of aggregation (or clumping) in human blood increases your blood viscosity and can result in cardiovascular disease. This experiment was intended to measure whether grounding to the earth’s innate electrical charge would have a positive effect on this blood condition. Can grounding help to prevent the deadly disease that is linked to it?

Click here to watch a video on “A Shaman’s Perspective on Health and Purity of Heart”
https://www.thesacredscience.com/a-sham ... -of-heart/

Long story short, walking barefoot substantially lowered the instance of unwanted blood cell clumping in every one of the subjects and promoted healthier circulation.

*A later study in the same journal found that “grounding” or “earthing” may help regulate both the endocrine and nervous systems as well.

We present-day humans live in a sea of electromagnetic waves radiated by mobile phone signals, Wi-Fi, automatic doors etc. This is referred to as “dirty electricity” or “electromagnetic pollution.” Luckily for us, the earth’s surface is rich with electrons that can neutralize this dirty electricity. Vibrating and charging the currents within us back into healthy balance.

This can boost our energy, balance our mood, clarify our thinking, and perhaps even save our lives.

A Sacred Science SPRING CHALLENGE for you:

The next month will be warm in the northern hemisphere while the planetary tilt leans us ever closer to the summer sun. So this should be easy…

Next time you’re in front of an appealing patch of earth,

Remove your shoes and socks and do the unthinkable…
Step forth onto said terra firma and feel the sensation that runs through your body…
Envision the cells in your bloodstream recalibrating as you do so, because well, they are.
That’s it.

*I’d recommend you do this at least a few times a week for better heart health and overall happiness. We’re earth dwellers, why separate ourselves from her with rubber soles?

(I find it’s fun to go foot-naked in odd places in the midst of shoe-wearers who scratch their heads in confusion as they watch… BUT it’s also nice to do in the comfort of your own backyard or the middle of the forest).

Stay shoeless,

pee your pants

Today we have something a bit more sensitive to talk about.

It may be uncomfortable for some, but this issue affects over 15 million women in the U.S. alone...

Incontinence.

And one of our good friends and health contributors has experienced this in a deeply personal way.

Health and Fitness Expert, Alex Miller, was devastated the day her mother nearly died.

But she never could have guessed that battling this traumatic experience would cause her mom to suffer from humiliating “pee leaks” for years.

Her mom felt like she wasn’t in control of her body anymore.

She was ashamed.

Frustrated.

And embarrassed to be a woman.

Alex’s strong confident mother was now struggling to even want to leave the house.

And Alex was heartbroken.

Your POOP: floater vs. sinker + what it means

We talk a lot about digestion in this newsletter, and digestion problems are one of the single most frequent problems reported by our readers. I know that talking about poop may seem a little taboo to some people, but the reality is that knowing if your poop is normal is one of the most important aspects to knowing if you have a digestion problem. Today's topic is a different look at poop quality rather than just the normal diarrhea vs constipation topic...

Your poop: Floater vs sinker, and why does it matter for your health?

https://thenutritionwatchdog.com/does-y ... oatingpoop

THIS makes poop slide out effortlessly each morning

Stanford researchers have discovered a simple tweak to your breakfast routine which can have a dramatic effect on how often, how easily, and how fully you empty your bowels.

In fact, Jeremy used this to eliminate decades of constipation in just 3 days when nothing else worked…

Along with 4 pounds of “stuck poop” that made him feel bloated, fatigued and heavy.

>> Here's how he did it (you’ll be shocked how easy it is)

Take 1 sip an hour before bed to boost your Growth Hormone and flatten your belly while you sleep

Recent studies are now showing how a simple tweak to your bedtime ritual can have dramatic effects in shrinking fat tissue while reversing the signs of premature biological aging every time you fall asleep.

This pre-bedtime daily ritual also helps you sleep deeper while increasing specific hormones that force your body to release stored abdominal fat while you sleep... AND it works equally well for BOTH men and women, as you'll see below...

>> Take 1 sip an hour before bed to boost belly fat melting hormones while you sleep (boosts GH while also helping you to sleep deeper)
