Rogers encourages team members to give back throughout November and discusses fundraising with Sportsnet’s Faizal Khamisa

From November 1 to November 30 is Give Together Month at Rogers, where we match all employee donations up to $1000 per person to a Canadian charity of their choice. To kick off our month of giving, we interviewed one of our own team members who shared what giving back means to him.

Beyond just being one of our Sportsnet reporters, Faizal Khamisa is also a motivational speaker, cancer survivor and an advocate for Toronto’s SickKids hospital. His fundraiser last year raised nearly $25,000 from an original goal of $3,000 for the children’s hospital. We asked Faizal to share his story and why he continues to give back every year.

Alberta Health Services - Doc of the Week

Dr. Habib Kurwa, Dermatologist, Calgary Zone
“It’s about team-based treatment, as we always make sure the patient becomes a part of the team,” says Dr. Habib Kurwa, a dermatologist that specializes in treating skin cancer, specifically Mohs’ micrographic surgery and photodynamic therapy.

“What drives me is the relationships we get to build with patients and the effectiveness of these procedures,” says Dr. Kurwa. “I’m especially proud when we provide care and reassurance to patients who would otherwise find their diagnosis and treatment intimidating and so they can relax and enjoy the experience as part of our team.”

Originally from the United Kingdom, Dr Kurwa has spent the past 10 years in Calgary. Outside of work, Dr. Kurwa enjoys theatre, reading, swimming and biking with his young children. He also has a passion for drawing and painting, and one of his works was recently exhibited in a national competition.

Building an Inclusive Organization: Leveraging the Power of a Diverse Workforce 1st Edition

A diverse workforce is a business imperative. Without it, companies are made up of employees who come from the same background and have the same skills and, therefore, the same blind spots. A diverse workforce brings together different strengths, a variety of experiences, a huge breadth of knowledge and myriad creative problem-solving techniques. However, in order to leverage the benefits of this diverse workforce, businesses must be inclusive. Inclusion ensures that employees feel supported, are treated fairly and are therefore happier, more engaged and more productive. This not only improves staff wellbeing but also boosts company performance. Building an Inclusive Organization is a practical guide to creating an environment of real inclusion. It highlights how to remove unconscious bias from company processes including recruitment and selection, how to make the case for diversity and inclusion to all stakeholders and how to embed inclusion into an organization's culture and overall business strategy.

Linamar scholarship winners named

Fellow scholarship winner Raya Kassam, a third year Electrical Engineering/Ivey HBA student from Mississauga, knew early on that she wanted a career in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) – a path encouraged by role models who include her parents and her engineering uncles.

“Looking at their (engineers’) rings at Thanksgiving, I could imagine that ring on my finger. They even let me try them on sometimes, even though they were far too big.”

The business emphasis came into focus during her first year as she realized the two disciplines demanded different, but complementary, skill-sets. “I think it’s important for a woman in STEM to be able to move up the managerial ladder.”

But until she heard of the Linamar scholarships, Kassam was undecided about pursuing the dual degree. “It was definitely a huge push. It pushed my teetering, on whether I wanted to do it or not, into a 100-per-cent yes.”

Her leadership already extends to building mentoring relationships for younger women in engineering and helping to organize a conference at Western on diversity in engineering in 2019.

Cornwall man climbs on roof of Africa

CORNWALL, Ontario - A former city resident and an avid world traveler is troubled by people getting into problems and sometimes sacrificing lives trying to scale the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest snow-capped Mount Kilimanjaro.
An increasing number of people from around the world, including Canada, are fascinated by Kilimanjaro in northern Tanzania.

Several Cornwall residents have successfully trekked to the “Roof of Africa” in the past couple of years.

“The mantra of the mountain is pole pole,” insists Muslim Harji.

Pole is a Swahili word meaning slow.

Harji said people have to take time and not rush to reach the summit.

“Never rush. You climb it slowly. The mountain is not going to go away.”

Harji settled in Cornwall in 1968.

His parents were fourth generation Africans.

Most Asians and other were evicted from their native Uganda by the brutal and ruthless dictator Idi Amin.

JANGHBARI: The Life Cycle of a Language
BY ISMAILIMAIL POSTED ON JANUARY 16, 2019

Below is an abstract of a chapter that is to appear later this year in a publication arising out of:

Third international thematic CRG conference on
Africa and the Indian Ocean
“History and Politics of Belonging in African Indian Ocean Island Societies”
Martin-Luther University, Halle (Saale), Germany, June 2018
JANGHBARI: THE LIFE CYCLE OF A LANGUAGE

Abstract:

The chapter opens with a discussion on contact between South Asia and the East African Coast and the Interior. It then focuses on the presence of the Kachchi people from Western India and their interaction with the Kiswahili people on the East African coast, their socio-economic situation in Zanzibar and the contradictions faced by the Kachchi people, known as Janghbari within their culture; to their sense of belonging and identity, their language use and language reproduction. The chapter then hypothesizes on the development of a Kachchi/Kiswahili sociolect and the birth of Janghbari, a Zanzibari pidgin/creole used by these people. It then looks at the origin, development and the growth of Janghbari, its dispersal in the Janghbari diaspora and its foreseeable demise. A linguistic analysis of speech samples collected in London and Coventry in the UK, and in Toronto and Vancouver in Canada, is presented in the chapter to indicate that the Janghbari sociolect is not a haphazard, arbitrary mixture of Kachchi and Kiswahili loan words, code mixing or code switching but a methodical development of a sociolect that shows a pattern of development of a creole language.

(Tracks of speech samples are available on the Internet at: https://soundcloud.com/safder/sets/janghbari-1or Google search : Soundcloud, Janghbari by Safder)

Contact Safder Alladina at < [email protected]> for a copy of the chapter.

Harvard ponders its symbols and spaces

New working group will look at how to use them to foster campus inclusion, leader says

Excerpt:

The group will include students, faculty, and staff, and will be chaired by Ali Asani, professor of Indo-Muslim and Islamic Religion and Cultures. The Gazette spoke with Asani ’77, AM ’81, Ph.D. ’84, to learn more about the work ahead.

Q&A
Ali Asani
GAZETTE: Tell us a little bit about the working group, what the charge is, and what you hope to accomplish.

ASANI: The working group is charged with evaluating symbols and spaces of engagement in the College. One of Harvard’s many strengths is the diversity of its community. A central goal of the College’s educational mission is to encourage students to engage with this diversity. Such engagement can not only be transformative, personally and intellectually, but also provides a skill that is critical to living in a nation, indeed a world, marked by difference. The working group will examine how well we are doing in fulfilling this mission and where there is room for improvement.

There’s a sense among some that at present we seem to leave engagement with diversity to chance, hoping that people will in due course of the time they spend at the College engage with others who are different from themselves, not just in terms of visible markers of difference (such as race, ethnicity, etc.) but also in terms of worldviews, life experiences, socio-economic status, and so on. This group will be looking at ways in which we can use structures, spaces, and activities that will encourage engagement across different groups of people. This is important since we are living in a society — and a world — which is increasingly polarized across differences. Such polarizations exist here on campus, too, though they may not always be explicit.

Impact beyond borders and languages

As a business owner and volunteer, Rahim Karmali (BA ’10) inspires hope and helps to break down barriers worldwide.

I often get asked how I find the time to manage my projects. I think the answer is pretty simple — I make the time.

Every day, I dedicate myself to working towards initiatives that inspire hope and help break down barriers, around the globe and right here at home in Canada. The opportunity to impact lives through sports and languages is something I have been tremendously lucky to experience first-hand, and it all goes back to my time at UWaterloo.

MLA Ian Paton pays tribute to the Devjis

I’m continually impressed by the contributions of the many talented people in our community. For decades Jane Devji and her husband Amin have enriched the lives of seniors and, in particular, those living with dementia.

Run by brother-sister team, this U of T startup is leading Big Pharma out of the dark

It was a little over two years ago when Saara Punjani and her brother, Ali Punjani, made their first sale to a multinational drug company from a “random meeting room” at the University of Toronto’s Bahen Centre.

At the time, Structura Biotechnology was barely even a startup. But what the Punjanis lacked in airy office space and slick marketing materials, they more than made up for in potentially transformative technology that could help find drug treatments for ailments that range from Alzheimer’s to cancer.

Ismaili Excellence - The White House Nursing Home

Looking into the arena of #ismailiexcellence, our attention was brought to the achievements of of Rahim and Salima Nurmohamed who are co-directors of The White House Nursing Home in New Malden, Surrey.

The White House Nursing Home is a small 30 bed independent nursing home that was established in the late 1980s by Salima’s father, the late Mr Badrudin Manji. It has evolved from a modest 4-bedroom detached nursing home conversion into an award-winning home with a focus on being an honest high-quality care provider and ensuring the continuation of a legacy.

Rahim and Salima became directors of The White House Nursing Home following the sudden demise of both her parents in May 2013 and as a small independent business, the last 12 months have been marked by some significant achievements for both of them commencing in March 2018 following the regulatory CQC inspection and achieving the almost-impossible “Outstanding” rating.

Following on from this, The White House Nursing Home was nominated for ‘Best SME (Small-Medium Enterprise) of the Year’ and ‘Business of The Year’ at the Kingston Business Excellence Awards and attained winners status in both categories. The judges comments were a further testament to the representation of #ismailiexcellence: “The White House Nursing Home provides the exemplar of what having a commitment to your community looks like. Not only great customer service, quality and passion in all that they do but importantly care”.

To cap off its run of achievements, The White House Nursing Home was announced as ‘Member of the Year 2018’ by the National Care Association, the independent governing body for care providers in the UK, for the exceptional service that residents receive by an experienced team who ensure that everyone is safe and living in a homely and friendly environment.

Since 2016 The White House Nursing Home has undergone a gruelling accreditation process to become a Gold Standard Framework care home, however, remaining firm in their focus on providing exceptional care has reaped this very humble “no bells and whistles” nursing home it's much deserved awards and recognition.

Speaking with Salima Nurmohamed about her flourishing business she said: “We would love the opportunity to celebrate these achievements with the UK Ismaili community; achievements which we are extremely proud of for many reasons. It is not only the legacy of our late parents that we have honoured, but also realising Our Imam's vision and aspirations for meritocracy in our respective fields and celebrating the fact that being small does not mean that you cannot compete and stand out amongst the big guns”.

Racing ahead of the game

As we sat in a bakery at London’s South Kensington waiting for our tea and cakes, I couldn't help but sense how composed the young woman sitting opposite me was. In Nabila Tejpar’s profession however, I sensed that staying calm under pressure came with the job. It wasn't every day that you met a young Ismaili woman who was taking the UK rally driving scene by storm.

Racing would appear to have been on the cards for Nabila from the earliest days given that she was born into a family with a history of rally driving. Both her father and her grandfather had taken up the sport professionally in Kenya.

The celebrated Safari Rally, a race held annually since 1953, will be familiar to many Ismailis with roots in East Africa. Due to the rough roads, arduous conditions, and changing weather, it was known as the most difficult event on the global rally circuit.

Adding to the illustrious family history, Nabila explained with a grin, was at the top of her professional priority list. In her youth, her first attempt at racing sparked a feeling of excitement she didn’t expect and in that moment, she knew that this was where her future lay.

Despite this passion, her education never took a back seat. The American University of Washington beckoned and she accepted a place in the International Business and International Relations undergraduate programme. The knowledge that a sound education was always vital never left Nabila’s mind, and only upon successfully obtaining a degree did she give up the dorm rooms for the dirt tracks. Now she was more ready than ever to demonstrate just what she could achieve in the rallying world.

Sport was, for her, an opportunity to try new things, challenge herself, test her own abilities, and live a life where every day was full of excitement. In 2015-16 she took on a further challenge by stepping up from the local to the national. Whilst her initial foray into the British Rally Championship did not immediately go to plan — she broke the car within the initial 4.5km, tearing the drive shaft — she was not going to allow a setback to dampen her drive. She went back the following day and finished ninth out of 16. The progress she made that day pushed her forward and 2017-18 saw her become the British ladies champion and led to her receiving the accolade of Essex Sports Personality of the Year.

This brother-sister duo turned their grandfather's shoe company into Rs 163 Cr turnover business: the story of Inc.5 brand

Almas Nanda found this to be troubling, and wanted to have both: plenty of style with oodles of comfort. In 1998, when she was but 24 years old, she started Inc.5 to provide women with stylish footwear that did not compromise on comfort.

In an interview with SMB Story, her brother, Amin Virji, who is the Managing Director of Inc.5, shares how they started from one store in Heera Panna Shopping Center in Mumbai and took the brand’s presence to 54 exclusive stores across India.

Inc. 5 Managing Director, Amin Virji

"Our grandfather launched ‘Regal Shoes’ in 1954. It was a family-run business but we were limited to manufacturing basic and formal footwear. In 1998, we thought of exploring the opportunity in the untapped footwear market that provides good-looking footwear with comfort. Hence Inc.5 was launched.”
