Sunder Nursery, a new 90-acre (36 hectare) city park in New Delhi, was officially inaugurated today by Shri M. Venkaiah Naidu, Vice President of India, and His Highness the Aga Khan, 49th hereditary Imam of the Shia Ismaili Muslims and founder and Chairman of the Aga Khan Development Network.

Speaking at the ceremony, Vice President Shri Venkaiah Naidu expressed appreciation for the contributions made by the institutions of the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN), under His Highness’ leadership.

THE FUTURE

Calling it “an important day for the historic city of Delhi,” the Vice President said the Sunder Nursery project was a model of public private partnership, combining the elements of “nature, culture and the future” as a “great addition to the capital.”

The inauguration ceremony on the grounds of Sunder Nursery was attended by senior government officials, ambassadors and foreign diplomats, as well as leaders of civil society organisations and residents from the surrounding neighbourhood.

“These projects were designed to honour the past while also serving the future,” said the Aga Khan addressing the gathering.

“And it is with the future in mind that we now dedicate the Sunder Nursery as one of the world’s great public parks— open to all for recreation, for contemplation, for education, and for inspiration.”

The Sunder Nursery project, the Aga Khan added, was an example of the importance of open, green spaces as part of a healthy urban landscape, with aesthetic, recreational and economic potential, as a catalyst for tourism, science, education, sustainable community development and sport.

PARTNERSHIP

Once used as a nursery by the British, the Sunder Nursery has been transformed over the last decade into a city park for the people of Delhi by the Aga Khan Trust for Culture (AKTC), in collaboration with the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, Central Public Works Department, the Archaeological Survey of India, the South Delhi Municipal Corporation and the US Ambassadors Fund for Cultural Preservation.

Landscape works at Sunder Nursery have been supported by the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation.

The Sunder Nursey Project has been part of a highly effective public private partnership that has demonstrated the highest standards of heritage conservation and urban revitalisation of historic spaces— making some of India’s most valuable cultural assets accessible, upgrading the urban fabric and improving economic opportunity for disadvantaged communities in surrounding areas.

Learnings from this endeavour, assets such as this one are already informing other projects at important historic sites in India and around the world.

20,000 SAPLINGS

Over 400 truckloads of construction rubble were removed and 20,000 saplings planted.

15 monuments have been conserved by the AKTC at Sunder Nursery, drawing attention to a unique ensemble of 16th Century garden tombs, a number of which have received World Heritage designation from Unesco.

Having served as a plant nursery for 100 years, Sunder Nursery is now Delhi’s newest botanical garden and the city’s first arboretum, with almost 300 tree species (the largest number found in any of Delhi’s parks).

A 20-acre micro-habitat zone is expected to be an important education facility and attract many of the 500,000 school children who each year visit the adjoining Humayun’s Tomb, also restored by the Aga Khan Trust for Culture.

Designed by the renowned landscape architect, the late Professor M. Shaheer, the new city park encompasses formal gardens and informal settings for families to enjoy— including water features, ponds and lakes, nursery beds, intimate sunken gardens, a flower showcase, rose garden, orchards, walking paths, seating and pavilions.

A sunken amphitheatre has been created to hold cultural events and festivals celebrating local traditions.

A facilities wing will include rooms for lectures and film screenings, food kiosks, a souvenir shop and multi-purpose halls for training programmes.

GARDENS

The grand central vista, which is over 500 metres long, follows the path of the 16th Century Grand Trunk Road, connecting the entrance zone of the Humayun’s Tomb World Heritage Site with the 16th Century Azimganj Serai to the north.

The creation of new green spaces and botanical gardens at Sunder Nursery will constitute a significant improvement in people’s living conditions and the quality of their environment.

The new leisure spaces and meeting places are expected to become an attraction for all area residents as well as visitors, becoming a cultural space that will contribute to economic and social development.

The Sunder Nursery is part of over a decade of pioneering cultural revitalisation and socioeconomic urban development projects undertaken by the Aga Khan Trust for Culture across the 300 acres of project area, including the Humayun’s Tomb.

The environmental and conservation efforts are coupled with a major socioeconomic effort aimed at improving the quality of life for the residents of neighbouring Nizamuddin Basti, by improving building standards, creating economic opportunities, and providing education, vocational training, health, and sanitation infrastructure.

These features are a hallmark of the AKDN’s cultural development projects in countries across the developing world and draw upon the Aga Khan’s conviction that culture and development are inextricably linked, with cultural legacies— appropriately rehabilitated or reconstructed— having the potential to become powerful catalysts for change and for alleviating poverty.

***

The Aga Khan is in the country on a 10-day official visit at the invitation of the government, on the occasion of his Diamond Jubilee— commemorating 60 years as Imam of the Shia Ismaili Muslims.

He acceded to the Imamat (the institution of hereditary spiritual leadership) in 1957 at the age of 20 years.

Earlier in the day, the Aga Khan met with Vice President Shri M. Venkaiah Naidu who hosted a lunch in his honour.

Later this evening the Aga Khan is scheduled to meet with Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi.

During his stay, he is also expected to meet with President of India Honourable Shri Ram Nath Kovind as well as the Chief Minister of Gujarat, the Governor of Gujarat, Deputy Chief Minister of Telengana, and the Chief Minister of Maharashtra and the Governor of Maharashtra.

These meetings are an opportunity to review the longstanding partnership between India and the Ismaili Imamat and to discuss how the institutions of the AKDN will continue to serve the country in years to come, improving opportunities and effecting sustainable improvement in the quality of life of vulnerable populations of all faiths and backgrounds.

Aga Khan to visit Mumbai, meet CM, governor on March 1

He will discuss early childhood development, education, healthcare and poverty alleviation with them

mumbai Updated: Feb 25, 2018 01:14 IST
Yesha Kotak

Hindustan Times

As a part of the diamond jubilee celebration since he took over as the spiritual leader of Shia Ismaili Muslim community Prince Karim, the Aga Khan, will be in the city next week. In Mumbai, he is scheduled to meet governor Ch Vidyasagar Rao and chief minister Devendra Fadnavis on March 1, and will discuss early childhood development, education, healthcare and poverty alleviation.

After meeting the governor and the chief minister, he will meet members of the community.

Currently on a 10-day visit to India, the Aga Khan has visited Delhi and Gujarat to be followed by Hyderabad and Mumbai.

The Aga Khan IV, who resides in France, took over as the head of the community from his grandfather Sir Sultan Mohammed Shah, who was the 48th Imam of Nizari Ismailis, around 60 years ago on July 11, 1957.

Ismaili Muslims as a community are spread across 25 countries in the world, with a population of around 10 lakh in India, which constitutes many businessmen. The community belongs to the Shia branch of Islam.

While in Delhi, the Aga Khan inaugurated the Sunder Nursery on Wednesday, along with vice-president Venkaiah Naidu. The 90-acre garden which was restored by the Aga KhanTrust for Culture – one of the many agencies of the Aga Khan Development Network - in partnership with Central Public Works Department and Archaeological Survey of India, houses 80 species of birds, 36 butterfly species and 280 native trees.

“All AKDN development programmes and institutions are non-denominational – there is no distinction on the basis of faith or gender – they are open to members of all communities,” said Semin Abdulla, of the French delegation for AKDN.

After his visit, a fund-raising concert for the Prince Aly Khan hospital, Mazagaon, will be held at NESCO, Goregaon on March 3.

The year-long celebrations began as a part of his diamond jubilee on July 11, 2017, with the Aga Khan visiting various countries across the globe. He has already visited East Africa, Canada, Pakistan and United Arab Emirates, and will be heading to the United States next.

The diamond jubilee is being commemorated by providing an international platform for artists from Ismaili community, wherein participants can perform across 14 sub-categories which includes dance, film, literary arts, musical performances, visual arts, poetry and graphic design, among others. The winner across six zones in India would compete at national level and then represent the country internationally.

The Aga Khan last visited India in 2013. Two years later, he was conferred with Padma Vibhushan award for his work towards social development in India.

“The community in Mumbai is filled with jubilation and gratitude for the upcoming visit of His Highness. Alongside celebratory programmes, the opportunity to meet His Highness is a deep spiritual occasion for the members of the community. It is especially significant given that the visit celebrates 60 years of His Highness Aga Khan’s leadership of Ismaili Muslim community,” said Reshma Lakhani, a volunteer of the community.

The Aga Khan’s Visit To India

The visit of the Ismaili spiritual leader the Aga Khan to India has always evoked considerable interest because of his multi-faceted personality and the philanthropic work of the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN) and the Aga Khan Trust for Culture. Prince Shah Karim Al Husseini Aga Khan IV’s exceptional role in promoting social, cultural and economic development projects across the world has earned him encomiums worldwide. However, the current 11-day visit of the Supreme spiritual leader of the Ismaili sect has historic significance, as it coincides with the commemoration of his Diamond Jubilee. The Aga Khan met President Ram Nath Kovind, Vice-President M Venkaiah Naidu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi and discussed issues of common concern.

The Aga Khan and the Indian Vice President inaugurated the Sunder Nursery Park neat the Humayun’s Tomb. It now serves as Delhi’s first arboretum with almost 300 tree species, the largest number in any of Delhi’s parks and with distinct heritage, ecological and nursery zones. On the 50th anniversary of India’s independence in 1997, the Aga Khan had made a pledge to restore the Humayun Tomb’s gardens. Thanks to the pioneering efforts of the Aga Khan Trust for Culture, in partnership with the Archaeological Survey of India, Humayun’s Tomb has been restored to its pristine glory.

Also ss part of the Urban Renewal Initiative, the Aga Khan Trust for Culture, Aga Khan Foundation, Central Public Works Department, South Delhi Municipal Corporation and Archaeological Survey of India in partnership have restored a number of adjoining monuments, including Nila Gumbad, Isa Khan’s tomb, Bu Halima’s tomb, Arab Serai gateways and Hazrat Nizamuddin Baoli among others.

The Aga Khan’s special bond with India is over a century old. As early as 1905, Aga Khan’s grandfather Sir Sultan Mahomed Shah established a school in Mundra, Gujarat. The Aga Khan institutions have done pioneering work in India in the fields of education, health, drinking water, rural development etc. These initiatives include rural support programmes in over 2,500 villages, the creation of 6,600 community institutions, urban and rural education programmes working with over 400 schools, a comprehensive sanitation initiative in six states. The Aga Khan Academy in Hyderabad is imparting quality education to thousands of students and a 161-bed multi-specialty acute care hospital in Mumbai is rendering yeoman service in healthcare.

Born in Switzerland but a British citizen (also a Canadian citizen), he was raised in Kenya and received his higher education at Harvard. The Aga Khan is the Imam and spiritual leader of the world’s over 15 million Ismaili Muslims. He runs a series of charitable foundations mostly devoted to helping the developing world, pouring huge amounts of money into often neglected parts of the world to support social development, education and charity projects.

Throughout the Diamond Jubilee year, the Aga Khan will travel to countries where his organisations operate to launch new programs to alleviate poverty and increase access to financing for housing, education and childhood development. The promotion of pluralism is one of the central themes of his Diamond Jubilee year. As he argues, the countries where his foundation works are historically pluralist. Many now suffer from ethnic and religious divides stoked by colonialism. “That inherited situation needs to be dealt with”, he asserts.

The spiritual leader is equally concerned about the climate change which “is a major threat to much of the developing world, and it needs to be looked at with great care.” His priority is to deal with poverty in the developing world. Instead of the enormous task of targeting the causes of climate change, his network largely focuses on fighting the ways it hurts the poor. That means identifying communities at risk of being hit by floods, drought, earthquakes, or mudslides, and making sure they’re moved or protected.

Beyond promoting pluralism, another key to addressing the tensions between Islam and the West is education. The Aga Khan’s message in these times of excesses perpetrated in the name of religion is compelling: ideas and culture are what matter, and that these are all to do with people, not necessarily faith. He stresses religion’s social traditions of peace, of tolerance and of pluralism. He has stressed that; all should work on building an “empathetic, welcoming, peaceful and generous” society, which he calls “a fundamental ethic of faith.”

Aga Khan may set up cancer centre, help Maharashtra agri sector

IANS | Mumbai Last Updated at March 1, 2018 20:45 IST

The Imam of the Shia Ismaili community, the Aga Khan, on Thursday said his Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN) will work for the agriculture sector and rural support in Maharashtra and consider setting up a children's cancer hospital here.

Lauding the efforts of the state government for tribal development, the visiting spiritual leader said he will consider extending support to finish incomplete irrigation projects in Maharashtra and create livelihood opportunities for tribals in remote areas.

The Aga Khan said the AKDN is already involved with MIT and Harvard for a programme on Architecture and Design, and expressed keenness to work closely with the University of Mumbai.

He offered the AKDN's assistance to the university in designing and developing degree or diploma programmes in heritage conservation.

The Aga Khan, currently on a visit to India to commemorate the ongoing Diamond Jubilee of his Imamat, was speaking after meeting Maharashtra Governor C.

V. Rao at Raj Bhavan here this afternoon.

He added that the AKDN is currently engaged in developmental works in six Indian states including Maharashtra mainly in the fields of education, healthcare, rural development and agriculture.

Welcoming the Aga Khan and congratulating him on the 60th year of his Imamat, Governor Rao praised his services to humanity and said that "the world needs a person like the Aga Khan to convey the message of Islam".

He pointed out that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed the government's intention to double farmers' incomes by 2022 and appreciated the Aga Khan's offer of cooperation for the state's agriculture sector.

Rao sought the AKDN's assistance in creating an Aga Khan Academy of Archery to offer quality training in this sport to sportspersons hailing from the rural and tribal areas of the state.

Earlier in the day, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis called on the Aga Khan and discussed efforts on employment generation for youth -- through forest tourism, village developments and water conservation.

"I am happy to know that the AKDN and the Aga Khan Health Services is considering to set up a cancer hospital for children in Mumbai," Fadnavis said.

The 82-year-old Prince Shah Karim Al Husseini, revered by his community worldwide as 'Aga Khan IV', assumed the title in July 1957, and the AKDN operates in at least 35 of the world's poorest countries.
