Pak Northern Area Jamaat hit by Natural Calamities

GILGIT, Aug 4: Flash floods triggered by torrential rains destroyed thousands of fruit and other trees in central Hunza, 100km north of Gilgit, on Thursday night. The floods also destroyed almost all water channels in the area, leaving residents without water.

Local union council members Alamgir Hussain, Altaf Hussain and Yaqut said that given the large-scale destruction caused by the floods, the region should be declared a calamity-hit area.

GILGIT: Seven persons including three women were killed Friday morning when lightning struck an area in district Nazar in Northern Areas. Twelve houses and cereal crop standing at several acres were also destroyed in the lightening bolts.

Lightening struck a mountain adjacent to Gach area in district Nazar at 3:45 am Friday morning causing landslides and flood in the area. The building of Markazi Jamatkhana in Gach hit by the floodwaters crumbled to ground causing death of seven persons praying in the building.

Police, administration officials, local volunteers and Ismaili boy scouts teams reached to the place after the incident and started relief operation. Relief volunteers found four dead bodies from rubbles of the building identified as Hurmat Ali Shah, Deedar Shah, Badami Khatoon and Syedana Khatoon. Three others Khashak Bibi, Rahman Shah and Arif still untraced.

Twelve houses adjacent to Gach nallah and several cattle were also swept away by the floodwater. Cereal crops standing at hundreds acres and several orchards were also damaged in the flood.

A three-kilometer portion of the road between Gach and Sengal was destroyed at four points closing Gilgit-Nazar road for traffic.

Yarkhun, Laspur suffer flood damages
CHITRAL, 09 Aug 05: Many bridges have been reported damaged in Yarkhun and Laspur areas which include bridges at Brep,, Parkusap, Istach, Phagram, etc. Yarkhun is reported worst affected. Former EDO Ali Akbar talking to Chitral News said Yarkhun valley is cut off from Chitral and he himself barely made it to Chitral after doing rock climbing at places. he said Gastro entritis infection has spread in the area and road link is severed, so the only way to send medical health is by helicopters.
Meanwhile in the south, The rains/floods had blocked Lowari pass at Tunnel Khowar for 15 hours before the main road was re-opened .(J Jigar)

Rs100,000 for each flood victim in N.As
ISLAMABAD, Aug 9: Minister for Kashmir Affairs and Northern Areas Tahir Iqbal has said that Rs100,000 each would be given to the families of those who perished during the recent rains in the Northern Areas (NAs) adding that all possible assistance would be provided to the injured persons.

Expressing grief over the loss of 14 precious lives the minister said that flood-warning and emergency relief centres would be established in every district of the areas to avoid losses in future.

He said that relief and rehabilitation package was being prepared for all those who faced financial and property losses during the torrential rains and following devastations.

The minister said district-wise damage assessment was being carried out. “I have directed the local administration to take immediate steps for clearing up blocked roads and rectification of damaged infrastructure to facilitate the rehabilitation of the flood affected people,” he added.-Our Reporter

Rozgar program to be launched in Northern Areas. Federal Minister

GILGIT: Government would launch Rozgar Pakistan Program in Northern Areas along with other parts of the country for providing employment opportunities to the unemployed youth. This was stated by Federal Minister Kashmir Affair and Northern Areas / Chief Executive NAs Maj. (R) Tahir Iqbal while addressing a public gathering at village Gaje, District Ghzir of Northern Areas.

Federal Minister distributed compensation cheque of Rs. One lack each among the families of seven flood victims who died during the rains and landslides last month, which wrecked havoc in these areas. Expressing grief over the loss of precious lives the Minister said that flash flood warning and emergency relief centers would be established in every district of Northern Areas to avoid major losses in future.

Minister later also visited village Damdas and two other rain affected villages in Gilgit where large-scale devastation occurred due to rain and floods. Talking to the affectees he assured that all kind of assistance and relief would be provided to them and issued directions to the local administration regarding arrangement for providing clean drinking water and other necessary facilities on immediate basis to the affectees residing in relief camps.

Tahir Iqbal also visited under construction 18 MV Hydel Power Grid Station at Niltar and ordered to accelerate the pace of work for achieving timely completion of project.

Niltar Hydel Power gfri9d Station on completion would satisfy 80-90% electricity requirement of Gilgit and adjoining areas. Tahir Iqbal also mentioned that Government of Pakistan has officially approved Gilgit to Tajikistan road and construction work would be started soon.
